Over the past two decades, the CICECO-hub scientists have devoted substantial efforts to advancing bioactive inorganic materials based on calcium phosphates and alkali-free bioactive glasses. A key focus has been the deliberate incorporation of therapeutic ions like Mg, Sr, Zn, Mn, or Ga to enhance osteointegration and vascularization, confer antioxidant properties, and impart antimicrobial effects, marking significant contributions to the field of biomaterials and bone tissue engineering. Such an approach is expected to circumvent the uncertainties posed by methods relying on growth factors, such as bone morphogenetic proteins, parathyroid hormone, and platelet-rich plasma, along with their associated high costs and potential adverse side effects. This comprehensive overview of CICECO-hub ' s significant contributions to the forefront inorganic biomaterials across all research aspects and dimensionalities (powders, granules, thin films, bulk materials, and porous structures), follows a unified approach rooted in a cohesive conceptual framework, including synthesis, characterization, and testing protocols. Tangible outcomes [injectable cements, durable implant coatings, and bone graft substitutes (scaffolds) featuring customized porous architectures for implant fixation, osteointegration, accelerated bone regeneration in critical-sized bone defects] were achieved. The manuscript showcases specific biofunctional examples of successful biomedical applications and effective translations to the market of bone grafts for advanced therapies.

Fe, Co and Si powders were exposed to mechanochemical activation by high-energy ball milling for 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 h. The samples were subsequently characterized by Mossbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), magnetic measurements and optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The room temperature Mossbauer measurements were consistent with the occurrence of FeCo2Si and Fe0.5Co0.5Si crystalline phases. The low temperature Mossbauer spectra confirmed the absence of superparamagnetism up to 44 K in the milled system. XRPD patterns supported the phase sequence derived from Mossbauer spectroscopy. The coercive field was found to increase with the ball milling time (BMT). Zero-field-cooling-field-cooling (ZFC-FC) measurements performed at 200 Oe in the temperature range 5-300 K evidenced the transition to the skyrmion phase of the Fe0.5Co0.5Si material below the critical temperature of 44 K. The optical absorption in the UV-Vis-NIR region of the spectrum was found to increase with BMT.

The silver/magnesium doped hydroxyapatite (AgMgHAp, Ca10_ x-yAgxMgy(PO4)6(OH)2, xAg=0.05 and yMg=0.02) nanocomposites coatings were deposited on Si substrate using the dip coating technique. The resulting coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The EDS analysis highlighted the presence of the constitutive elements of the silver/magnesium doped hydroxyapatite (AgMgHAp) nanocomposites coatings. The surface microtexture of the AgMgHAp was assessed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. The AFM data suggested the obtaining of a uniform deposited layer comprised of equally distributed nanoconglomerates. FT -IR studies highlighted the presence of vibrational modes associated with the phosphate and hydroxyl groups. No bands associated with silver or magnesium were observed. The XPS analysis highlighted the presence of the constituent elements of hydroxyapatite (Ca 2p, P 2 s, O 1 s), as well as dopants (Ag 3d, Mg 1 s and Mg 2p). The antifungal evaluation of AgMgHAp coatings was carried out using the Candida albicans ATCC 10231 fungal strain. The results of the antifungal assay revealed that the AgMgHAp coatings exhibited a strong inhibitory antifungal activity. Furthermore, the data highlighted that the AgMgHAp inhibited the development of biofilm on their surface. The results revealed that the antifungal activity of the coating varied based on the duration of incubation. On the other hand, the data also showed that AgMgHAp nanocomposites coatings inhibited the fungal cell adhesion and development from the early stages of the incubation. In addition to morphological analysis, we additionally take advantage of AFM images to investigate and explore the domain of fractal and multifractal analysis applied to the films under evaluation. Our studies indicates that nanocomposite coatings made from AgMgHAp demonstrate strong antifungal properties. MoS2 has proven its efficacy in flexible electronics, transistor devices, and various biological and chemical applications. However, it is still challenging to achieve large-area MoS2 monolayers with desired material quality and electrical properties to fulfill the requirement for practical applications. Moreover, the main strategy for the preparation of a 2D heterostructure it is based on the sequential stacking of the layered materials using wet or dry transfer methods which introduces many defects. This paper presents an economically viable and straightforward two-step methodology to obtain MoS2 thin films, encompassing magnetron sputtering deposition of Mo and subsequent annealing in a sulfur-rich environment. This approach successfully yielded MoS2 thin films on Si\SiO2 substrates. Additionally, heterostructures consisting of few layer graphene (FLG) and MoS2 were directly obtained using the same method. The utilization of grazing incidence X-ray diffraction verified the formation of the hexagonal MoS2 phase, a finding further confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigations revealed the successful sulfurization process, with surface-bound oxides forming only subsequent to air exposure. Comprehensive assessment involving X-ray reflectivity, atomic force microscopy and XPS collectively inferred the fabrication of thin films comprised of a small number of MoS2 layers covering the entire substrate. Electrical assessments exhibited an electrical hysteresis, demonstrating its potential for memristor applications. Overall, this study outlines a cost-effective fabrication method for producing nanoscale MoS2 thin films with excellent properties, avoiding the use of toxic gases such as H2S. These findings contribute to the potential development of cutting-edge applications.

Design of composite support materials based on Sn-doped TiO2 and carbon is one of the strategies to develop corrosion-resistant and CO-tolerant Pt electrocatalysts for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. As the synthesis methodology may have crucial influence on the structural and functional properties of the composites, different preparation routes for the novel support materials are explored and compared. Ti(1-x)SnxO2-C (x: 0.1-0.3) composites with different mixed oxide/carbon ratios were prepared by two sol-gel-based synthesis routes, namely (i) the introduction of a Sn precursor after the formation of the TiO2-rutile nuclei on the carbon backbone (route A), and (ii) simultaneous introduction of Ti and Sn precursors, resulting in good mixing of the Sn- and Ti-sol before the addition of the carbon (route B). The bulk and surface microstructure of the composites and the electrocatalysts obtained by their Pt-loading were investigated in detail. The incorporation of tin into the TiO2-rutile unit cell was confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy; the results indicated doping levels in good accordance with the amount of tin precursor. The advantages of composites and Pt electrocatalysts obtained via synthesis route B were that they do not contain segregated Sn-0 or SnO2 phases, have a more homogeneous/uniform mixed oxide distribution over the carbon backbone, and the electrochemically active surface area values (similar to 60-80 m(2)/g(Pt)) are twice as high as those of catalysts with similar compositions synthesized by method A. A common feature of the composites prepared by routes A and B was the presence of a tin oxide-rich overlayer identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As a consequence, the electrocatalytic behavior of the catalysts was not influenced by the Ti/Sn ratio and was mainly dependent on the synthesis method used in the preparation of composite support materials. Elemental maps confirmed the formation of areas where Pt and the Sn doping element were in atomic proximity to each other, which means a favorable interaction either for the bifunctional mechanism or the electronic ligand effect. An increase in carbon content in composite materials led to an increase in both catalytic activity and long-term stability. The results of electrochemical studies showed that Sn-containing Pt catalysts with a high carbon content (75 wt%) are the most promising for potential use both as an anode and a cathode for PEM fuel cells.
