Nanocomposites have been obtained by dispersing various amounts of vapor grown carbon nanofibers within isotactic polypropylene. Thermal investigations done by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis revealed the effect of the vapor grown carbon nanofibers on the melting, crystallization, alpha, and beta relaxations. Direct current electrical features of these nanocomposites have been investigated and related to the thermal features of these nanocomposites. The effect of the loading with carbon nanofibers on the electrical properties of these nanocomposites is discussed within the percolation theory. The percolation threshold was estimated at about 5.5% wt carbon nanofibers. The temperature dependence of the direct current conductivity is analyzed in detail and it is concluded that the electronic hopping is the dominant transport mechanism. A transition from one-dimensional hopping towards a three-dimensional hopping was noticed as the concentration of carbon nanofibers was increased from 10% wt to 20% wt carbon nano-fiber. The possibility of a differential negative resistivity is suggested. (C) 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A novel nanocomposite was obtained through the covalent immobilization of lipoic acid on the surface of silver nanoparticles-decorated silica nanoparticles (SiO2@Ag). The hybrid organic inorganic material obtained was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, scanning and transmision electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-Visible spectroscopy. Its antioxidant, cytotoxic, antimicrobial activity and influence on mammalian cells cycle were evaluated. The results of this study have shown that the functionalization of SiO2@Ag with lipoic acid resulted in a composite with increased specificity of interaction with different mammalian cell lines and antioxidant activity, but with decreased cytotoxicity and antimicrobial properties. Therefore, the SiO2@Ag functionalized with lipoic acid could be successfully used in certain concentrations to modulate the cell cycle, in order to obtain the desired anti-proliferative or stimulatory therapeutic effect. Lowering the temperature of crystallization by deposition of thin films on a heated substrate represents the easiest way to find new means to develop and improve new working devices based on nanocrystals embedded in thin films. The improvements are strongly related with the increasing of operation speed, substantially decreasing the energy consumption and reducing unit fabrication costs of the respective semiconductor devices. This approach avoids major problems, such as those related to diffusion or difficulties in controlling nanocrystallites size, which appear during thermal treatments at high temperatures after deposition. This article reports on a significant progress given by structuring Ge nanocrystals (Ge-NCs) embedded in silicon dioxide (SiO2) thin films by heating the substrate at 400 degrees C during co-deposition of Ge and SiO2 by magnetron sputtering. As a proof-of-concept, a Si/Ge-NCs:SiO2 photo-sensitive structure was fabricated thereof and characterized. The structure shows superior performance on broad operation bandwidth from visible to near-infrared, as strong rectification properties in dark, significant current rise in the inversion mode when illuminated, high responsivity, high photo-detectivity of 10(14) Jones, quick response and significant conversion efficiency with peak value reaching 850% at -1 V and about 1000 nm. This simple preparation approach brings an important contribution to the effort of structuring Ge nanocrystallites in SiO2 thin films at a lower temperature for the purpose of using these materials for devices in optoelectronics, solar cells and electronics on flexible substrates.

A hysteresis loop with three polarization states is obtained in the case of a symmetric epitaxial ferroelectric-interlayer-ferroelectric structure with bottom and top SrRuO3 electrodes. The ferroelectric layers are of PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3, while the interlayer is CoFe2O4. It is shown that the three polarization states can be separately accessed, suggesting that this type of structure can be used as building element for a three-state nonvolatile ferroelectric random-access memory (FERAM). The presence of the three-state memory effect is explained through a simple phenomenological model based on Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. The findings of this study can pave the way to multistate all-oxide FERAM devices, resulting in a 50% increase in the storage density compared to actual nonvolatile memories.

The exciton-phonon interaction, considered as a stimulated Raman scattering process, is studied in different semiconductor mixtures: PbI2/TiO2, PbI2/Si and CdS/Si. Raman spectra recorded at excitation wavelengths of 514.5 and 488 nm for PbI2 and CdS, respectively, reveal a strong enhancement of the Raman lines peaked at 97 and 305 cm(-1), evaluated by the ratio I-TK/I-300 (K) between the relative intensities of the spectra recorded in the temperature range of 88-300 K. It is found that PbI2 and CdS exhibit a decrease in the Raman intensity modes with decreasing temperature, while in TiO2 and Si an increase in the Raman lines intensities peaked at 138 and 520 cm(-1) is observed. This behavior can be explained by an energy transfer process from PbI2 or CdS towards TiO2 and Si. This explanation is supported by the schematic potential energy levels diagram obtained from the density of states, which is calculated using the density functional theory. According to this energy levels diagram, the electrons are expected to migrate directly from the conduction band (CB) energetic levels of the PbI2 and CdS towards the CB levels of TiO2 and Si.

Graphene is widely used in nanotechnologies to amplify the photocatalytic activity of TiO2, but the development of TiO2/graphene composites imposes the assessment of their risk to human and environmental health. Therefore, reduced graphene oxide was decorated with two types of TiO2 particles co-doped with 1% iron and nitrogen, one of them being obtained by a simultaneous precipitation of Ti3+ and Fe3+ ions to achieve their uniform distribution, and the other one after a sequential precipitation of these two cations for a higher concentration of iron on the surface. Physico-chemical characterization, photocatalytic efficiency evaluation, antimicrobial analysis and biocompatibility assessment were performed for these TiO2-based composites. The best photocatalytic efficiency was found for the sample with iron atoms localized at the sample surface. A very good anti-inhibitory activity was obtained for both samples against biofilms of Gram-positive and Gram-negative strains. Exposure of human skin and lung fibroblasts to photocatalysts did not significantly affect cell viability, but analysis of oxidative stress showed increased levels of carbonyl groups and advanced oxidation protein products for both cell lines after 48 h of incubation. Our findings are of major importance by providing useful knowledge for future photocatalytic self-cleaning and biomedical applications of graphene-based materials.

The specific dynamic magnetic response and magnetic relaxation phenomena in magnetite-based glass-ceramics by controlled crystallization of Fe-rich borosilicate glasses with 25 wt% Fe2O3, in the presence of two types of nucleating agents, Cr2O3 and P2O5, were investigated. The magnetic response is complex and shows contributions arising from two subsystems: a system with collective characteristics, superspin-glass like, and another one with single particle characteristics (superparamagnetic) with dipolar interaction. The nucleating agents have strong influence on the characteristic temperatures and anisotropy energy.

We report on the synthesis by Pulsed Laser Deposition of simple and Ti doped hydroxyapatite thin films of biological (ovine dentine) origin. Detailed physical, chemical, mechanical and biological investigations were performed. Morphological examination of films showed a surface composed of spheroidal particulates, of micronic size. Compositional analyses pointed to the presence of typical natural doping elements of bone, along with a slight non-stoichiometry of the deposited films. Structural investigations proved the monophasic hydroxyapatite nature of both simple and Ti doped films. Ti doping of biological hydroxyapatite induced an overall downgrade of the films crystallinity together with an increase of the films roughness. It is to be emphasized that bonding strength values measured at film. Ti substrate interface were superior to the minimum value imposed by International Standards regulating the load-bearing implant coatings. In vitro tests on Ti doped structures, compared to simple ones, revealed excellent biocompatibility in human mesenchymal stem cell cultures, a higher proliferation rate and a good cytocompatibility. The obtained results aim to elucidate the overall positive role of Ti doping on the hydroxyapatite films performance, and demonstrate the possibility to use this novel type of coatings as feasible materials for future implantology applications. We report the synthesis of tungsten nanoparticles with two distinct shapes, concave hexapods and faceted cube-octahedral nanocrystals. These types of nanoparticles were obtained with a cluster source based on magnetron sputtering and gas aggregation, by supplying the magnetron discharge with continuous or pulsed wave radiofrequency power. Detailed morphological and microstructural studies were performed. The hexapod particles present a dendritic growth while the faceted ones have a single crystal structure. The alpha-W and beta-w crystalline phases are present in both types of nanoparticles; nevertheless, the beta-W structure is dominant for the hexapod ones. Although the beta-w phase is usually metastable, we observed its unexpected long term preservation in hexapod nanoparticles. The results, added to previously reported nanoflower-like particles, point out the ability to control the shape and structure of the tungsten nanoparticles using the magnetron sputtering gas aggregation technique. Composites containing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and different mass contents of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared and structurally investigated. X-ray Diffraction of pristine PAN reveals the presence of crystalline and amorphous phases which change their ratio under thermal annealing and addition of MWCNT. For as prepared samples, thermal analysis reveals two glass transition temperatures, which support the hypothesis that unoriented PAN is a two-phase material. Infrared spectrum of as prepared PAN suggests that the polymer is not stabilized. Dielectric investigations of PAN/MWCNT composites show that permittivity has a strong increase as the MWCNT mass content increases, while the dielectric losses are comparable in all samples.
