Antibacterial cerium-doped hydroxyapatite (Ce-HAp) layers have been researched sparingly in recent years. The Ce-HAp powder, Ca10-xCex(PO4)(6)(OH()2)with x(Ce)= 0.05, was obtained by an adapted chemical co-precipitation method at room temperature. The target was prepared using the Ce-HAp (x(Ce)= 0.05) powder sintered in air at 600 degrees C. The coatings on the Ti substrate were generated in plasma using a radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering discharge in an Ar gas flow in a single run. To collect the most complete information regarding the antimicrobial activity of cerium-doped hydroxyapatite with x(Ce)= 0.05, (5Ce-HAp), antimicrobial studies were carried out both on the final suspensions and on the coated surfaces. The target was tested using ultrasound measurement, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), glow-discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The present study exhibited for the first time results of the homogeneous coatings of hydroxyapatite doped with cerium using a radio frequency magnetron sputtering technique. In addition, this study highlighted for the first time the stability of the cerium-doped hydroxyapatite gels used in the creation of the coating. Ultrasound measurements on the concentrated suspension of 5Ce-HAp showed a good stability compared to double distilled, water which was chosen as the reference fluid. Particles with spherical shape were observed by both TEM and SEM analysis. The broadening of the IR bands in the IR spectrum of the 5Ce-HAp film in comparison with the IR spectrum of the precursor target indicate the formation of interlinked bonds into the layer bulk. XPS analysis revealed that the mixture of Ce(3+)and Ce(4+)ions in the hydroxyapatite (HAp) structure of the coatings could be due to the deposition process. The surface of 5Ce-HAp coatings was homogenous with particles having a spherical shape. A uniform distribution of all the constituent elements on the surface the 5Ce-HAp layer was revealed. The antimicrobial assays proved that both 5Ce-HAp suspensions and 5Ce-HAp coatings effectively inhibited the development of colony forming units (CFU) for all the tested microbial strains. Moreover, the antimicrobial assays emphasized that the 5Ce-HAp suspensions had a biocide effect against Escherichia coli (E. coli) andCandida albicans(C. albicans)microbial strains after 72 h of incubation.

A simple dip coating procedure was used to prepare the magnesium doped hydroxyapatite coatings. An adapted co-precipitation method was used in order to obtain a Ca25-xMgx(PO4)(6)(OH)(2), 25MgHAp (x(Mg)= 0.25) suspension for preparing the coatings. The stabilities of 25MgHAp suspensions were evaluated using ultrasound measurements, zeta potential (ZP), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) information at nanometric resolution regarding the shape and distribution of the 25MgHAp particles in suspension was obtained. The surfaces of obtained layers were evaluated using SEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis. The antimicrobial evaluation of 25MgHAp suspensions and coatings on various bacterial strains and fungus were realized. The present study presents important results regarding the physico-chemical and antimicrobial studies of the magnesium doped hydroxyapatite suspensions, as well as the coatings. The studies have shown that magnesium doped hydroxyapatite suspensions prepared withx(Mg)= 0.25 presented a good stability and relevant antimicrobial properties. The coatings made using 25MgHAp suspension were homogeneous and showed remarkable antimicrobial properties. Also, it was observed that the layer realized has antimicrobial properties very close to those of the suspension. Both samples of the 25MgHAp suspensions and coatings have very good biocompatible properties.

In this work, new optical properties of composites based on polystyrene (PS) microspheres and graphene oxide (GO) are reported. The radical polymerization of styrene in the presence of benzoyl peroxide, pentane and GO induces the appearance of new ester groups in the PS macromolecular chains remarked through an increase in the absorbance of the infrared (IR) band at 1743 cm(-1). The decrease in the GO concentration in the PS/GO composites mass from 5 wt.% to 0.5 wt.% induces a diminution in the intensities of the D and G Raman bands of GO simultaneous with a down-shift of the D band from 1351 to 1322 cm(-1). These variations correlated with the covalent functionalization of the GO layers with PS. For the first time, the photoluminescent (PL) properties of PS/GO composites are reported. The PS microspheres are characterized by a PL band at 397 nm. Through increasing the GO sheets' concentration in the PS/GO composite mass from 0.5 wt.% to 5 wt.%, a PS PL quenching process is reported. In addition, in the presence of ultraviolet A (UVA) light, a photo-degradation process of the PS/GO composite having the GO concentration equal to 5 wt.% is demonstrated by the PL studies.

This work involves the synthesis and characterization of Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) layers. The films were prepared on Mo/glass substrates by single-step electrodeposition method followed by sulfurization at 500 degrees C under argon flow. The effect of boric acid concentration on the crystallographic structure, compositional and morphological properties of CZTS films was investigated, with the objective to understand the growth behavior and to enhance the film properties. Cyclic Voltammetry was used in order to estimate the adequate deposition potential for the CZT alloy. The x-ray diffraction analysis showed the formation of the kesterite phase in all the samples. The Raman and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies confirmed the existence of the CZTS phase. The scanning electron microscopy was employed to inspect the films structure. The results indicated that increasing the concentration of boric acid affects the physico-chemical properties of the films.

The influence of temperature factor to crystal structure as well as magnetic and electric properties of strontium hexaferrite partially substituted with diamagnetic indium ions has been investigated. Ferroelectric properties have been found out in SrFe11.9In0.1O19 compound that contradicts to conventional opinion, which describe its crystal structure within the framework of centrosymmetric space group P6(3)/mmc (No. 194). For determination features of the crystal structure, which are responsible for ferroelectric properties of strontium hexaferrite, have been carried out neutron diffraction measurements with high resolution in temperature range from 1.5 to 740 K. The analysis of hexaferrite structure has been executed within the framework both centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric space group. Values of coefficients of magneto crystalline anisotropy at 5 and 300 K and influence of ambient temperature to linear size of magnetic regions have been determined from magnetic measurements. In this study, the synergistic behavior of Ni species and bimodal mesoporous undoped SnO2 is investigated in oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) under alkaline conditions without any other modification of the compositional phases or using noble metals. An efficient and environmentally friendly hydrothermal method to prepare bimodal mesoporous undoped SnO2 with a very high surface area (>130 m(2) g(-1)) and a general deposition-precipitation method for the synthesis of well-dispersed Ni species on undoped SnO2 are reported. The powders were characterized by adsorption-desorption isotherms, TG-DTA, XRD, SEM, TEM, Raman, TPRH2, and XPS. The best NiSn composite generates, under certain experimental conditions, a very high TOF value of 1.14 s(-1) and a mass activity higher than 370 A g(-1), which are remarkable results considering the low amount of Ni deposited on the electrode (3.78 ng). Moreover, in 1 M NaOH electrolyte, this material produces more than 24 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential value of approximately +0.33 V, with only 5 wt % Ni species. This performance stems from the dual role of undoped SnO2, on the one hand, as a support for active and well-dispersed Ni species and on the other hand as an active player through the oxygen vacancies generated upon Ni deposition.

This paper presents some studies on the organic heterostructures realized by Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation in both bi-layer and mixed layer configurations on glass substrates covered by flat or nano-patterned ITO. The donor, a star-shaped arylenevinylene compound, 4,4',4 ''-tris[(4'-diphenylamino) styryl] triphenylamine, and acceptor, a non-fullerene compound, N,N'-bis-(1-dodecyl)perylene-3,4,9,10 tetracarboxylic diimide, were blended in three weight ratios: 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4. A grating of cylindrical pillars with a periodicity of 1.1 mu m has been developed by UV-Nanoimprint Lithography in a polymer layer. The shape of the nanostructures changed to cone trunk by the Pulsed Laser Deposition of ITO on this nanostructured surface. The effect of the nanostructures and composition on the optical and electrical properties of the heterostructures was analyzed. The nano-patterning affected both the UV-Vis transmission and photoluminescence through the multiple reflections inside the cavities and at interfaces and the particularities of the molecular arrangement. The patterning was preserved independently of composition, but the roughness increased with increasing acceptor amount. The I-V characteristics drawn at room temperature in dark revealed an ohmic contact behavior for all heterostructures. The nano-patterning had a similar effect on the current in the heterostructures with mixed layer (1:2) and stacked bi-layer.

Curcumin (CR) is a natural antioxidant compound extracted from Curcuma longa (turmeric). Until now, researches related to the incorporation of CR into layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were focused only on hybrid structures based on a MgxAl-LDH matrix. Our studies were extended towards the incorporation of CR in another type of LDH-matrix (Zn3Al-LDH) which could have an even more prolific effect on the antioxidant activity due to the presence of Zn. Four CR-modified Zn3Al-LDH solids were synthesized, e.g., PZn3Al-CR(Aq), PZn3Al-CR(Et), RZn3Al-CR(Aq) and RZn3Al-CR(Et) (molar ratio CR/Al = 1/10, where P and R stand for the preparation method (P = precipitation, R = reconstruction), while (Aq) and (Et) indicate the type of CR solution, aqueous or ethanolic, respectively). The samples were characterized by XRD, Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transformed IR (ATR-FTIR) and diffuse reflectance (DR)-UV-Vis techniques and the CR-release was investigated in buffer solutions at different pH values (1, 2, 5, 7 and 8). XRD results indicated a layered structure for PZn3Al-CR(Aq), PZn3Al-CR(Et), RZn3Al-CR(Aq) impurified with ZnO, while RZn3Al-CR(Et) contained ZnO nano-particles as the main crystalline phase. For all samples, CR-release revealed a decreasing tendency towards the pH increase, and higher values were obtained for RZn3Al-CR(Et) and PZn3Al-CR(Et) (e.g., 45% and 25%, respectively at pH 1).

The molecular structure of the 8-hydroxyquinoline-bis (2-phenylpyridyl) iridium (IrQ(ppy)(2)) dual emitter organometallic compound is determined based on detailed 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), to identify metal-ligands coordination, isomerization and chemical yield of the desired compound. Meanwhile, the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) was used to determine the interatomic distances around the iridium ion. From the NMR results, this compound IrQ(ppy)(2) exhibits a trans isomerization with a distribution of coordinated N-atoms in a similar way to facial Ir(ppy)(3). The EXAFS measurements confirm the structural model of the IrQ(ppy)(2) compound where the oxygen atoms from the quinoline ligands induce the splitting of the next-nearest neighboring C in the second shell of the Ir3+ ions. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), as a part of the detailed molecular analysis, confirms the purity of the desired IrQ(ppy)(2) organometallic compound as being more than 95%, together with the progress of the chemical reactions towards the final compound. The theoretical model of the IrQ(ppy)(2), concerning the expected bond lengths, is compared with the structural model from the EXAFS and XRD measurements.

Over the last decades, zinc oxide nanostructures (NSs) have been studied due to outstanding chemical and physical properties, able to serve a plethora of applications. The growth of NSs on different substrates coated with ITO film allow their direct implementation in various micro-/nano-devices. The microwave-assisted hydrothermal method is a new hybrid approach used for synthesis of oxide NSs due to unique advantages in energy efficiency/high reaction rate and possibility of obtaining different morphologies with size and shape-controlled, which are relevant for some applications. In this paper, we present a simple one step synthesis of ZnO 1D and 2D NSs with homogeneous distribution and orientation perpendicular to substrates covered with ITO film, using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The effect of seed layer treatment on the structure, morphology and optical properties of the obtained NSs have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV/VIS/NIR and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The obtained ZnO NSs with 1D and 2D morphologies show high visible transmittance between 80-90 % and band gap energy values between 3.27 and 3.22 eV. The I-V curves and photoluminescence spectra indicate good ohmic contacts on both sides (ITO and Au-top electrodes) and highlight the effect of the thermal treatment of seed layer on the photoluminescence emission and electrical conductivity of the obtained NSs.
