In this work, a multi-analytical approach involving nitrogen porosimetry, small angle neutron and X-ray scattering, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and electron microscopy was applied to organically modified silica-based xerogels obtained through the sol-gel process. Starting from a tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) precursor, methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) was added to the reaction mixture at two different pH values (2.0 and 4.5) producing hybrid xerogels with different TEOS/MTES molar ratios. Significant differences in the structure were revealed in terms of the chemical composition of the silica network, hydrophilic/hydrophobic profile, particle dimension, pore shape/size and surface characteristics. The combined use of structural characterization methods allowed us to reveal a relation between the cavity dimensions, the synthesis pH value and the grade of methyl substitution. The effect of the structural properties on the controlled Captopril release efficiency has also been tested. This knowledge facilitates tailoring the pore network for specific usage in biological/medical applications. Knowledge on structural aspects, as reported in this work, represents a key starting point for the production of high-performance silica-based hybrid materials showing enhanced efficacy compared to bare silica prepared using only TEOS.

Polycrystalline NiO thick film-based gas sensors have been exposed to different test gas atmospheres at 250 degrees C and measured via simultaneous electrical resistance and work function investigations. Accordingly, we decoupled different features manifested toward the potential changes, i.e., work function, band-bending, and electron affinity. The experimental results have shown that the presence of moisture induces an unusual behavior toward carbon monoxide (CO) detection by considering different surface adsorption sites. On this basis, we derived an appropriate detection mechanism capable of explaining the lack of moisture influence over the CO detection with NiO-sensitive materials. As such, CO might have both chemical and dipolar interactions with pre-adsorbed or lattice oxygen species, thus canceling out the effect of moisture. Additionally, morphology, structure, and surface chemistry were addressed, and the results have been linked to the sensing properties envisaging the role played by the porous quasispherical-hollow structures and surface hydration.

Goethite based nanocomposites with a different composition such as 6FeO(OH)center dot MnO(OH)center dot 0.5H(2)O (Mn-composite), xFeO(OH)center dot M(OH)(2)center dot yH(2)O (Co-composite (M: Co, x = 12, y = 3), Ni-composite (M: Ni, x = 7, y = 2)) and xFeO(OH)center dot MO center dot yH(2)O (Cu-composite (M: Cu, x = 5.5, y = 3), Zn-composite (M: Zn, x = 6, y = 1.5)) have been prepared by a soft chemical synthesis consisting in acetate hydrolysis. The data provided by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-Vis-NIR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and Mossbauer spectra account for a slight modification of all composites' physicochemical properties compared to the starting material. Powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations revealed the secondary phase nature and presence along with that of goethite. The TEM data are also consistent with a nano rod-like morphology with a 5-10 nm width and an average length of 40 nm. The catalytic oxidation of cyclooctene with O-2 using isobutyraldehyde as reductant and acetonitrile as a solvent was performed in batch conditions for 5 h at room temperature. The selectivity for the epoxide was higher than 99% for all tested solids. The conversion of cyclooctene decreased from 55% to 4% following the same order of variance as the base/acid sites ratio: Mn-composite > Fe-composite > Co-composite > Ni-composite > Zn-composite > Cu-composite. The 6FeO(OH)center dot MnO(OH)center dot 0.5H(2)O (Mn-composite) exhibited the most promising catalytic activity in cyclooctene oxidation, which can be correlated with the redox ability of Mn(iii) combined with the increased base character of this solid. The catalytic activity of this sample decreases by 10% after several successive reaction cycles.

Zn-Fe-O nanoparticle systems (Z3F, Z20F and Z60F) were produced by changing the Zn:Fe ratio (0.97 : 0.03, 0.8 : 0.2 and 0.4 : 0.6 in at%, respectively) in Zn(ii)-Fe(iii)-carboxylate precursors. According to X-ray diffraction, Z60F is nearly single-phase ZnFe2O4 (5.9 nm crystallite size), Z20F is a ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposite consisting of 48.8% ZnFe2O4 (4.7 nm crystallite size), and Z3F is apparently pure ZnO (9.5 nm). We found evidence for a ZnFe2O4 spinel of high inversion degree (80-100%) and with superparamagnetic (SPM) behaviour at room temperature in all three samples by a remarkable correlation between HRTEM, FTIR, XPS, Mossbauer and magnetization analyses. Iron modifies the decomposition process of the precursor and enhances its viscosity, which appears to favour the separation of Zn- and Fe-rich phases. As a consequence, two-phase systems of individual nanocrystals/nanoparticles (ZnO and ZnFe2O4) are formed. The large anisotropy constant, 10(6)-10(7) erg cm(-3), of the ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles and the concentration dependence of their magnetic energy barrier are explained in terms of interparticle interactions interlinked with finite size effects and high inversion degree; these factors also control the other parameters of importance for applications, including the blocking temperature (13-111 K), saturation magnetization (1.08-17.7 emu g(-1) at 300 K, 4.6-44.8 emu g(-1) at 5 K) and coercivity (85.4-491 Oe at 5 K). Magnetic dynamic results, particularly modelled by the Neel-Brown and Vogel-Fulcher laws, yield fitting parameters which validate the presence of concentration-dependent dipole-like interactions between ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles. A fraction of iron was found in the Fe2+ state, presumably substituting for Zn2+ in zinc oxide; however, the samples behave like ZnFe2O4 SPM nanoclusters/nanoparticles dispersed in a nonmagnetic ZnO particle assembly, rather than Zn(Fe)O dilute magnetic semiconductors. The relevance of the properties of the investigated material for specific applications is highlighted throughout the manuscript.

We report for the first time on the antimicrobial activity of MgB2 powders produced via the Reactive Liquid Infiltration (RLI) process. Samples with MgB2 wt.% ranging from 2% to 99% were obtained and characterized, observing different levels of grain aggregation and of impurity phases. Their antimicrobial activity was tested against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC BAA 1026, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. A general correlation is observed between the antibacterial activity and the MgB2 wt.%, but the sample microstructure also appears to be very important. RLI-MgB2 powders show better performances compared to commercial powders against microbial strains in the planktonic form, and their activity against biofilms is also very similar.

Polarization switching in ferroelectric films is exploited in many applications, such as non-volatile memories and negative capacitance field affect transistors. This can be inhomogeneous or homogeneous, depending on if ferroelectric domains are forming or not during the switching process. The relation between the polarization switching, the structural quality of the films and the negative capacitance was not studied in depth. Here, Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3 (PZT) layers were deposited by pulse laser deposition (PLD) and sol-gel (SG) on single crystal SrTiO3 (STO) and Si substrates, respectively. The structural quality was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, while the electric properties were investigated by performing hysteresis, dynamic dielectric measurements, and piezo-electric force microscopy analysis. It was found that the PZT layers grown by PLD on SRO/STO substrates are epitaxial while the layers deposited by SG on Pt/Si are polycrystalline. The polarization value decreases as the structure changes from epitaxial to polycrystalline, as well as the magnitude of the leakage current and of the differential negative capacitance, while the switching changes from homogeneous to inhomogeneous. The results are explained by the compensation rate of the depolarization field during the switching process, which is much faster in epitaxial films than in polycrystalline ones.

Achieving thermoelectric devices with high performance based on low-cost and nontoxic materials is extremely challenging. Moreover, as we move toward an Internet-of-Things society, a miniaturized local power source such as a thermoelectric generator (TEG) is desired to power increasing numbers of wireless sensors. Therefore, in this work, an all-oxide p-n junction TEG composed of low-cost, abundant, and nontoxic materials, such as n-type ZnO and p-type SnOx thin films, deposited on borosilicate glass substrate is proposed. A type II heterojunction between SnOx and ZnO films was predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and confirmed experimentally by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) show a sharp interface between the SnOx and ZnO layers, confirming the high quality of the p-n junction even after annealing at 523 K. ZnO and SnOx thin films exhibit Seebeck coefficients (alpha) of similar to 121 and similar to 258 mu V/K, respectively, at 298 K, resulting in power factors (PF) of 180 mu W/m K-2 (for ZnO) and 37 mu W/m K-2 (for SnOx). Moreover, the thermal conductivities of ZnO and SnOx films are 8.7 and 1.24 W/m K, respectively, at 298 K, with no significant changes until 575 K. The four pairs all-oxide TEG generated a maximum power output (P-out) of 1.8 nW (approximate to 126 mu W/cm(2)) at a temperature difference of 160 K. The output voltage (V-out) and output current (I-ou(t)) at the maximum power output of the TEG are 124 mV and 0.0146 mu A, respectively. This work paves the way for achieving a high-performance TEG device based on oxide thin films.

Energy harvesting for Internet of Things applications, comprising sensing, life sciences, wearables, and communications, requires efficient thermoelectric (TE) materials, ideally semiconductors compatible with Si technology. In this work, we investigate the potential of GeSn/Ge layers, a group IV material system, as TE material for low-grade heat conversion. We extract the lattice thermal conductivity, by developing an analytical model based on Raman thermometry and heat transport model, and use it to predict thermoelectric performances. The lattice thermal conductivity decreases from 56 W/(m.K) for Ge to 4 W/(m.K) by increasing the Sn atomic composition to 14%. The bulk cubic Ge0.86Sn0.14 alloy features a TE figure of merit of ZT similar to 0.4 at 300 K and an impressive 1.04 at 600 K. These values are extremely promising in view of the use of GeSn/Ge layers operating in the typical on-chip temperature range.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous coordination networks extraordinarily varied in physicochemical characteristics such as porosity, morphologies, and compositions. These peculiarities make MOFs widely exploited in a large array of applications, such as catalysis, chemicals and gas sensing, drug delivery, energy storage, and energy conversion. MOFs can also serve as nanostructured precursors of metal oxides with peculiar characteristics and controlled shapes. In this work, starting from MIL125-(Ti), a 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (BDC)-based MOF with Ti as metallic center, mesoporous TiO2 powders containing both anatase and rutile crystalline phases were produced. A challenging utilization of these porous MOF-derived Ti-based oxides is the optically-based quantitative detection of molecular oxygen (O-2) in gaseous and/or aqueous media. In this study, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity changes during O-2 exposure of two MOF-derived mixed-phase TiO2 powders were probed by exploiting the opposite response of rutile and anatase in VIS-PL and NIR-PL wavelength intervals. This result highlights promising future possibilities for the realization of MOF-derived doubly-parametric TiO2-based optical sensors.

Cation-substituted hydroxyapatite (HA), standalone or as a composite (blended with polymers or metals), is currently regarded as a noteworthy candidate material for bone repair/regeneration either in the form of powders, porous scaffolds or coatings for endo-osseous dental and orthopaedic implants. As a response to the numerous contradictions reported in literature, this work presents, in one study, the physico-chemical properties and the cytocompatibility response of single cation-doped (Ce, Mg, Sr or Zn) HA nanopowders in a wide concentration range (0.5-5 at.%). The modification of composition, morphology, and structure was multiparametrically monitored via energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray photoelectron, Fourier-transform infrared and micro-Raman spectroscopy methods, as well as by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. From a compositional point of view, Ce and Sr were well-incorporated in HA, while slight and pronounced deviations were observed for Mg and Zn, respectively. The change of the lattice parameters, crystallite size, and substituting cation occupation factors either in the Ca(I) or Ca(II) sites were further determined. Sr produced the most important HA structural changes. The in vitro biological performance was evaluated by the (i) determination of leached therapeutic cations (by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry) and (ii) assessment of cell behaviour by both conventional assays (e.g., proliferation-3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl) 5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium assay; cytotoxicity-lactate dehydrogenase release assay) and, for the first time, real-time cell analysis (RTCA). Three cell lines were employed: fibroblast, osteoblast, and endothelial. When monophasic, the substituted HA supported the cells' viability and proliferation without signs of toxicity. The RTCA results indicate the excellent adherence of cells. The study strived to offer a perspective on the behaviour of Ce-, Mg-, Sr-, or Zn-substituted HAs and to deliver a well-encompassing viewpoint on their effects. This can be highly important for the future development of such bioceramics, paving the road toward the identification of candidates with highly promising therapeutic effects.
