Almost six decades ago, in Romania a small group of physicists begun to study chalcogenide compositions, motivated primarily by the desire to understand the phase-change phenomenon in these materials, discovered recently, at that time, by Stanford R. Ovshinsky. It took not too long for them to realize the challenges these materials set to the research. With newcomers to the field, the research was broadened. In some cases just for basic research, to model, and to understand the chalcogenide materials, whereas in other cases, the applicative potential was revealed and used. Herein, the evolution of the field of these somewhat exotic materials is followed, listing the main contributions done in Romania, both in basic and applied research.

The influence of Ag and Au nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets on the photodegradation of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) was determined by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The ALA photodegradation was explained by considering the affinity of thiol groups for the metallic nanoparticles synthesized in the presence of trisodium citrate. The presence of excipients did not induce further changes when ALA interacts with Ag and Au nanoparticles with sizes of 5 and 10 nm by exposure to UV light. Compared to the Raman spectrum of ALA powder, changes in Raman lines' position and relative intensities when ALA has interacted with films obtained from Au nanoparticles with sizes between 5 and 50 nm were significant. These changes were explained by considering the chemical mechanism of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. The photodegradation of ALA that had interacted with metallic nanoparticles was inhibited in the presence of RGO sheets.

In this work, the metal and semiconducting nanoparticles (AgNPs, ZnONPs and AgZnONPs) were phyto-synthesized using aqueous vegetal extracts from: Caryophyllus aromaticus L. (cloves) and Citrus reticulata L. (mandarin) peels. The morphological, structural, compositional, optical and biological properties (antibacterial activity, and cytotoxicity) of the prepared composites were investigated. The most effective sample proved to be AgZnONPs, derived from cloves, with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of 0.11 mg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) value of 2.68 mg/mL. All the other three composites inhibited bacterial growth at a concentration between 0.25 mg/mL and 0.37 mg/mL, with a bactericidal concentration between 3 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL. The obtained composites presented biocidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus, and biocompatibility (on human fibroblast BJ cells) and did not damage the human red blood cells. Additionally, an important result is that the presence of silver in composite materials improved the bactericidal action of these nanomaterials against the most common nosocomial pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus.

We obtained carbon nanotubes (CNTs) doped polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films using the nematic E7 and polymethyl methacrylate, a composite that combines the benefic characteristic of the liquid crystals (LC) and carbon nanoparticles. The clearing temperatures recorded by differential scanning calorimetry for the PDLC blends were found to be lower than the value recorded for pure E7 LC mixture with no significant impact of the CNTs' concentration. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (DS) measurements were performed in the (10(-1) / 107) Hz frequency range, in the temperature domain (280-350) K. From the DS study, a two order magnitude variation of the conductivity over the entire temperature range was observed. The presence of CNTs results in an increase of electrical conductivity, with increasing concentration. Because the loss tangent spectra have complex shapes, they were fitted using the generalized Havriliak-Negami functions, and the characteristic relaxation times were extracted. The dependency of the characteristic relaxation time on temperature was modeled using the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann function, and it showed a temperature variation according to the Arrhenius law. The increase of the CNT concentration increases the activation energy of the molecular electric dipoles of the LC. The interface LC-polymer interactions influence the nematic to isotropic phase transition of the LC.

Organic bulk heterojunctions (BHJ) based on zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc), fullerene compounds (C60 fullerene and [6,6]-phenyl C71 butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM)), and 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene (rubrene) were fabricated through the matrix-assisted pulsed-laser evaporation (MAPLE) technique. Thus, ZnPc:C60 and ZnPc:PC70BM binary BHJ and ZnPc:rubrene:PC70BM ternary BHJ were deposited as thin films on various substrates. The preservation of the chemical structure of the organic compounds during the MAPLE deposition was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. The structural, optical, and morphological properties of the deposited layers were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), respectively. Further, the electrical properties of the developed structures based on ZnPc:C60, ZnPc:PC70BM, and ZnPc:rubrene:PC70BM were evaluated. The J-V characteristics of the organic structures, recorded under illumination, show that an increase in the open-circuit voltage (V-OC) is achieved in the case of the ternary blend in comparison with that obtained for the binary blends. The results evidenced that MAPLE-deposited thin films containing binary and ternary organic bulk heterojunctions can find applications in the field of photovoltaic devices.

Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is an economically and environmentally friendly alternative to other toxic and expensive materials used for photovoltaics, however, the variation in the composition during synthesis is often followed by the occurrence of the secondary binary and ternary crystalline phases. These phases produce changes in the optical absorption edge important in cell efficiency. We explore here the secondary phases that emerge in a combinatorial Cu2S-ZnS-SnS2 thin films library. Thin films with a composition gradient were prepared by simultaneous magnetron sputtering from three binary chalcogenide targets (Cu2S, SnS2 and ZnS). Then, the samples were crystallized by sulfurization annealing at 450 degrees C under argon flow. Their composition was measured by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), whereas the structural and optical properties were investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), Raman spectroscopy and optical transmission measurements. As already known, we found that annealing in a sulfur environment is beneficial, increasing the crystallinity of the samples. Raman spectroscopy revealed the presence of CZTS in all the samples from the library. Secondary crystalline phases such as SnS2, ZnS and Cu-S are also formed in the samples depending on their proximity to the binary chalcogenide targets. The formation of ZnS or Cu-S strongly correlates with the Zn/Sn and Cu/Zn ratio of the total sample composition. The presence of these phases produces a variation in the bandgap between 1.41 eV and 1.68 eV. This study reveals that as we go further away from CZTS in the composition space, in the quasi-ternary Cu2S-ZnS-SnS2 diagram, secondary crystalline phases arise and increase in number, whereas the bandgap takes values outside the optimum range for photovoltaic applications.

In this work, new evidence for the photodegradation reactions of acetaminophen (AC) is reported by photoluminescence (PL), Raman scattering and FTIR spectroscopy. Under excitation wavelength of 320 nm, AC shows a PL band in the spectral range of 340-550 nm, whose intensity decreases by exposure to UV light. The chemical interaction of AC with the NaOH solutions, having the concentration ranging between 0.001 and 0.3 M, induces a gradual enhancement of the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and PL spectra, when the exposure time of samples at the UV light increases until 140 min, as a result of the formation of p-aminophenol and sodium acetate. This behavior is not influenced by the excipients or other active compounds in pharmaceutical products as demonstrated by PLE and PL studies. Experimental arguments for the obtaining of p-aminophenol and sodium acetate, when AC has interacted with NaOH, are shown by Raman scattering and FTIR spectroscopy.

In this work, a complementary ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) study on melatonin (MEL) hydrolysis in the presence of alkaline aqueous solutions and the photodegradation of MEL is reported. The UV-VIS spectrum of MEL is characterized by an absorption band with a peak at 278 nm. This peak shifts to 272 nm simultaneously with an increase in the band absorbance at 329 nm in the presence of an NaOH solution. The isosbestic point localized at 308 nm indicates the generation of some chemical compounds in addition to MEL and NaOH. The MEL PL spectrum is characterized by a band at 365 nm. There is a gradual decrease in the MEL PL intensity as the alkaline solution concentration added at the drug solution is increased. In the case of the MEL samples interacting with an alkaline solution, a new photoluminescence excitation (PLE) band at 335 nm appears when the exposure time to UV light reaches 310 min. A down-shift in the MEL PLE band, from 321 to 311 nm, as a consequence of the presence of excipients, is also shown. These changes are explained in reference to the MEL hydrolytic products.

This study addresses the deposition with improved adhesion of TiO2:N/SiO(2)mixture, with different concentrations of the nano-powders (NPs) (1:0,5; 1:1 and 1:1,5) on 100% cotton fabrics. The characteristics of the deposited thin films were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), Raman scattering, FTIR, and UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy. To improve the treatment durability to the external factors, the different crosslinking methods were used. Photocatalytic activity of functionalized textile fabrics was evaluated by determining the photodegradation efficiency of the methylene blue (MB) dye and forest juice, measuring the color difference of the irradiated samples compared with non-irradiated samples. Washing durability of the samples was achieved qualitatively by determining the photocatalytic activity remaining on the textile fabrics after 1 and 5 washing cycles. The samples treated with the mixture of TiO2:N/SiO(2)have demonstrated improved self-cleaning properties, the highest photocatalytic activity being obtained for the highest value of TiO2:N/SiO(2)NPs molar concentrations equal to 1:1.

Covalent immobilization of antibodies to protein G beads is a basic molecular biology method, although the beads present poor recovery results. Our aim was to reuse the immobilized antibody-protein G complex on a very small scale, therefore we optimized the crosslinking procedure to be used on the wells of a standard 96-well microplate. The method used involves the affinity binding of the antibody to the protein G surface, followed by the immobilization step using different crosslinking reagents, DMP and BS3, quenching the crosslinking reaction, and binding the antibody-specific antigen. By scaling down the procedure, we were able to reuse the anti-EGFR crosslinked wells more than 20 times. This method can be used to perform assays on a wide range of solid supports containing the protein G in an immobilized form, including functionalized nanosensors, for immunoprecipitation, protein and cell lysate purification, target protein enrichment.
