A critical brief review of the evolution of the ideas describing the matter, with emphasis on concepts relevant to the journal's goals: surfaces, interfaces, and interphases is presented. The complex relationship between interphase and interface, including the role of the submicron confinement on the physical and chemical properties of matter are analyzed from both theoretical and experimental standpoints. The most important consequences triggered by the recognition of interphases are briefly discussed. Most matter (at a macroscopic scale) is dominated by bulk behavior. The rapid advances in materials and especially the accelerated progress in the synthesis and characterization of submicron materials and associated technologies, labeled as the "nano revolution", revived the research on interfaces and interphases at atomic and molecular scales. It is suggested that interphase ignites a new kind of material, whose "bulk physical features" have been distorted by the submicron confinement. Such an "interphase surface" (for example a drop of gold with a diameter smaller than a few nanometers, or a few layers of graphene), may exist free standing and be stable. These materials, which no more exhibit the bulk properties will be tentatively referred to as "Sutter" ("Sutter" defines an abbreviation that involves both surface and matter concepts). Sutter is characterized by the fact that its physical and chemical properties are controlled by the interphase. It is concluded that Sutter is essentially a submicron phase of the matter, that exhibits size-dependent features. Sutter materials may be embedded in various materials (such as polymers, metals, and alloys) as nanocomposites, thus projecting specific features at the macroscopic scale. Most free standing interphases may be considered as Sutter materials or phases. The interface does not qualify as a Sutter material.

Thick tungsten oxide layers were prepared electrophoretically in order to be used as photoanodes in photoelectrochemical water oxidation applications. The highest photocurrent density was obtained for a WO3 layer with thickness of similar to 900 nm. Additionally, WO3/BiVO4 and WO3/BiVO4/MIL-101(Fe) heterojunctions have been fabricated using WO3 layer as substrate. WO3/BiVO4 shows an increased value of the electrochemical active surface area indicating that more sites of this photoanode are activated through the formation of the heterojunction. The small V5+ signals observed in the V 2p XPS spectra of these heterojunctions were attributed to the substitution of V5+ atoms with W6+ atoms on the surface of BiVO4. Excessive W doping of the BiVO4 film determined the decrease of the photoelectrochemical performance of WO3/BiVO4 photoanode. The significant improvement of the photoconversion efficiency of the sample decorated with MIL-101(Fe) indicated that this cocatalyst provides sites more efficiently in the photoelectrochemical process. This performance was correlated with the reduced value of the charge transfer resistance at electrode/electrolyte interface obtained from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigation.

In this work, applications of nanohybrid composites based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) with anatase crystallin phase and single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWCNHs) as promising catalysts for the photodegradation of amoxicillin (AMOX) are reported. In this order, TiO2/SWCNH composites were prepared by the solid-state interaction of the two chemical compounds. The increase in the SWCNH concentration in the TiO2/SWCNH composite mass, from 1 wt.% to 5 wt.% and 10 wt.% induces (i) a change in the relative intensity ratio of the Raman lines located at 145 and 1595 cm(-1), which are attributed to the E-g(1) vibrational mode of TiO2 and the graphitic structure of SWCNHs; and (ii) a gradual increase in the IR band absorbance at 1735 cm(-1) because of the formation of new carboxylic groups on the SWCNHs' surface. The best photocatalytic properties were obtained for the TiO2/SWCNH composite with a SWCNH concentration of 5 wt.%, when approx. 92.4% of AMOX removal was achieved after 90 min of UV irradiation. The TiO2/SWCNH composite is a more efficient catalyst in AMOX photodegradation than TiO2 as a consequence of the SWCNHs' presence, which acts as a capture agent for the photogenerated electrons of TiO2 hindering the electron-hole recombination. The high stability of the TiO2/SWCNH composite with a SWCNH concentration of 5 wt.% is proved by the reusing of the catalyst in six photodegradation cycles of the 98.5 mu M AMOX solution, when the efficiency decreases from 92.4% up to 78%.

We report a novel approach in producing and characterizing enriched isotopic selenium-82 (82Se) thin films with trigonal hexagonal crystal structure (t-82Se), the most thermodynamically stable form of the element. The ob-tained t-82Se thin films are used as targets in accelerator based nuclear structure experiments. Several 82Se thin films with thicknesses around 5 mg/cm2 (10.4 & mu;m) were deposited on 5 mg/cm2 (3 & mu;m) tantalum (Ta) foils by vacuum evaporation-condensation method. The condensed 82Se films exhibit unstable amorphous structure (a-82Se), therefore were converted to t-82Se by means of an appropriate vacuum heat treatment developed in the target laboratory of IFIN-HH. After the thermal treatment, the microstructure, morphology and composition of the 82Se films were evaluated before and after the vacuum thermal treatment using Fourier Transform Raman Spectroscopy (FT-Raman), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Mi-croscopy (SEM) and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. Furthermore, an in-beam & gamma;-spectroscopy experiment performed at the 9-MV tandem accelerator of IFIN-HH confirmed that the ther-mally treated t-82Se films possess high durability and high purity with no detectable contamination and no mass loss.

Properties of surface species of the nematic mixture E7 in contact with inorganic oxides (especially those containing more or less aluminium ions) are in detail investigated by infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. The absorption infrared peaks were decomposed into Gaussian components, the procedure allowing an easier comparison with the behaviour of related composites. We worked at enough small concentrations of the E7 relatively to support this ratio permitting the (partial) elimination of the species belonging to the bulk. Species put here in evidence are species that are hydrogen bonded to the surface of OH groups, molecules randomly oriented on the surface, some species bonded by involvement of pi electrons of the CN group to the aluminium ions, thus implying a strong interaction to the support. Supramolecular assemblies of E7 molecules are thus followed up.

Zn1-xFexO nanoparticles with the iron concentrations level in the dilute regime (x = 0.001---0.01) were produced by a sol-gel route from acetate precursors along with an un-doped and 3 at.% Fe-doped reference. The X-ray diffraction of the un-doped and 0.1-1 at.% Fe-doped samples reveal the reflections for only the ZnO wurtzite structure. Fe doping enhances the a-axis lattice constant, the unit cell volume and the microstrain. Iron doping reduces the average crystallite/particle size (confirmed by Scanning Electron Microscopy), improving the surface-to-volume ratio or the concentration of defective surface sites. XPS identifies the iron in both Fe3+ and Fe2+ states. XPS and Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy indicate a broad distribution (distortion) of Fe3+ sites on the surface of ZnO nanoparticles. The blue shift and broadening of the UV emission, and quenching of defect-related photoluminescence in the Fe-doped samples verify the presence of iron in the ZnO lattice and surface intrinsic defects. 0.1-1 at.% Fe-doped ZnO show room temperature ferromagnetism, RTFM, characteristic of dilute magnetic semiconductors, DMS. The magnetization measurements with temperature evidence an antiferromagnetic alignment and an increase of ferromagnetic contribution with Fe doping up to 1 at.%. Zn0.97Fe0.3O reference is a superparamagnetic ZnO/ZnFe2O4 nanocomposite with a blocking temperature of 20 K; HRTEM shows (ultra)fine ZnFe2O4 particles at the surface of ZnO nanoparticles. The analysis of experimental data of 0.1-1 at.% Fe-doped ZnO was done in terms of iron coupling with intrinsic defects, which can generate surface Fe3+ states with geometries similar to the Fe3+ in inverse spinel ZnFe2O4. The superexchange interaction (resembling that in the inverse spinel ZnFe2O4) between the Fe3+ sites with distorted configuration resulting in ferrimagnetism was hypothesised as a possible mechanism of RTFM. Experimental (structural, local chemical, magnetic, optical) and interpretation results can be used to optimize the processing conditions for Fe-doped ZnO to serve as an effective DMS, e.g. for spintronic applications.

Pockels and Kerr effects are linear and nonlinear electro-opticaleffects, respectively, used in many applications. The modulation ofthe refractive index is employed in different photonic circuits. However,the greatest challenge is in photonic elements for quantum computingat room temperature. For this aim, materials with strong Pockels/Kerreffects and & chi;((2))/& chi;((3)) nonlinearsusceptibilities are necessary. Here, we demonstrate composition-modulatedstrong electro-optical response in epitaxial films of (Ba,Ca)(Ti,Zr)O-3 perovskite titanate. These films are grown by pulsed laserdeposition on SrTiO3. Depending on the ratios of Ca/Baand Ti/Zr, films show high Pockels or Kerr optical nonlinearities.We relate the variable electro-optic response to the occurrence ofnanopolar domains with different symmetries in a selected compositionrange. These findings open the route to easily implement nonlinearoptical elements in integrated photonic circuits.

Nanostructured surfaces based on silver nanoparticles decorated ZnO-CuO core-shell nanowire arrays, which can assure protection against various environmental factors such as water and bacteria were developed by combining dry preparation techniques namely thermal oxidation in air, radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering and thermal vacuum evaporation. Thus, high-aspect-ratio ZnO nanowire arrays were grown directly on zinc foils by thermal oxidation in air. Further ZnO nanowires were coated with a CuO layer by RF magnetron sputtering, the obtained ZnO-CuO core-shell nanowires being decorated with Ag nanoparticles by thermal vacuum evaporation. The prepared samples were comprehensively assessed from morphological, compositional, structural, optical, surface chemistry, wetting and antibacterial activity point of view. The wettability studies show that native Zn foil and ZnO nanowire arrays grown on it are featured by a high water droplet adhesion while ZnO-CuO core-shell nanowire arrays (before and after decoration with Ag nanoparticles) reveal a low water droplet adhesion. The antibacterial tests carried on Escherichia coli (a Gram-negative bacterium) and Staphylococcus aureus (a Gram-positive bacterium) emphasize that the nanostructured surfaces based on nanowire arrays present excellent antibacterial activity against both type of bacteria. This study proves that functional surfaces obtained by relatively simple and highly reproducible preparation techniques that can be easily scaled to large area are very attractive in the field of water repellent coatings with enhanced antibacterial function.

The aim of this work is to highlight the influence of blends based on TiO2 nanoparticles and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) on the photodegradation of acetaminophen (AC). To this end, the catalysts of TiO2/RGO blends with RGO sheet concentrations equal 5, 10, and 20 wt. % were prepared by the solid-state interaction of the two constituents. The preferential adsorption of TiO2 particles onto the RGO sheets' surfaces via the water molecules on the TiO2 particle surface was demonstrated by FTIR spectroscopy. This adsorption process induced an increase in the disordered state of the RGO sheets in the presence of the TiO2 particles, as highlighted by Raman scattering and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The novelty of this work lies in the demonstration that TiO2/RGO mixtures, obtained by the solid-phase interaction of the two constituents, allow an acetaminophen removal of up to 95.18% after 100 min of UV irradiation. This TiO2/RGO catalyst induced a higher photodegradation efficiency of AC than TiO2 due to the presence of RGO sheets, which acted as a capture agent for the photogenerated electrons of TiO2, hindering the electron-hole recombination. The reaction kinetics of AC aqueous solutions containing TiO2/RGO blends followed a complex first-order kinetic model. Another novelty of this work is the demonstration of the ability of PVC membranes modified with Au nanoparticles to act both as filters for the removal of TiO2/RGO blends after AC photodegradation and as potential SERS supports, which illustrate the vibrational properties of the reused catalyst. The reuse of the TiO2/RGO blends after the first cycle of AC photodegradation indicated their suitable stability during the five cycles of pharmaceutical compound photodegradation.

Complex physico-chemical investigations have been performed on white inlaid substance used in the orna-mentation of prehistoric clay artefacts from southern Romania ceramics from the Early Chalcolithic, up to the Middle/Late Bronze Age. Structural and morphological investigations of the white pigments have showed hundreds of nm up to microns size particles with calcite and hydroxyapatite (ash bone) as dominant components. The calcite was found on Early Chalcolithic pigment vessels while those where hydroxyapatite was dominant from the Middle/Late Bronze Age. FTIR spectra revealed the biogenic source of the hydroxyapatite (i.e. cremated animal bone) and the crystallinity degree values agrees with the expected temperatures of firing of the ancient furnaces; the calcite-based pigments were supposed to be filled post firing. The EPR was not able to able to provide a clear assignment of the cremated animal bones but thermoluminescence showed various sources of calcite.
