A composite material with applications in optoelectronics has been investigated. Pulsed laser deposition CdSe-doped glass film was prepared by the combinatorial deposition from two targets, namely pure CdSe and glass belonging to the 20Li(2)O-10Al(2)O(3)-7BaO-2La(2)O(3)-2ZnO-59P(2)O(5)system. Exciton peaks in the Vis domain, related to electron-hole pairs transitions from the valence band to the conduction band, were revealed in the optical absorption spectra of the CdSe-doped film. CdSe quantum dots (QDs) band gap energy depends on the CdSe quantum confinement effect. CdSe-doped film photoluminescence exhibits peaks in the red domain assigned to CdSe transitions from the excited state to the ground state. The size of CdSe nanoclusters, determined from x-ray diffraction is correlated with scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy results. Vibration modes specific both to CdSe QDs and to the vitreous network have been evidenced by Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy.

The investigation of the effect of carbon nanomaterials and lipids on the aggregation particularities of the amyloid beta/A beta(1-42) layers is important for understanding the generation mechanism of neuronal disorder and how it can be inhibited. Additionally, amyloids are nanomaterials with a wide area of potential applications from nanotechnology to biotechnology. This paper presents a study about the preparation of A beta(1-42) layer by two different methods, Langmuir-Blodgett (L-B) and drop cast (DC), on Si and Si covered by a layer of Buckminster fullerene, C-60, and on the effect of fullerene layer or/and cholesterol (Ch) on the generation of A beta(1-42) secondary structure forms, relevant for specific applications. AFM, SEM FTIR and Raman analysis offered details about the layer surface topography, morphology and particularities of the secondary structure generated in the process of A beta(1-42) molecules aggregation. This study showed that the presence of Ch inhibited the formation of fibrils in A beta(1-42) film deposited by L-B on Si covered by C-60 The structures developed during aggregation were correlated with the topography and roughness of the films. The presence of Ch determined a decrease in roughness for L-B film and increase in roughness for DC film deposited on Si covered by C-60 layer.

We investigate topological and disorder effects in non-Hermitian systems with chiral symmetry. The system under consideration consists in a finite Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain to which two semi-infinite leads are attached. The system lacks the parity-time and time-reversal symmetries and is appropriate for the study of quantum transport properties. The complex energy spectrum is analyzed in terms of the chain-lead coupling and chiral disorder strength, and shows substantial differences between chains with even and odd number of sites. The mid-gap edge states acquire a finite lifetime and are both of topological origin or generated by a strong coupling to the leads. The disorder induces coalescence of the topological eigenvalues, associated with exceptional points and vanishing of the eigenfunction rigidity. The electron transmission coefficient is approached in the Landauer formalism, and an analytical expression for the transmission in the range of topological states is obtained. Notably, the chiral disorder in this non-Hermitian system induces unitary conductance enhancement in the topological phase. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Addition of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) in photocatalytic paints represents a promising alternative aiming to mineralize gaseous pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the risks of release of nanoparticles to human health and the environmental impact have to be taken carefully into account for their development. To take into account these risks, we develop a new method of TiO2 NP synthesis. Here, we report the electrostatic stabilization in aqueous medium with pyrophosphate buffers of different pH ranges followed by coating with bio-inspired molecules (lysine, deferoxamine, dopamine) and polymers (polyacrylic acid, polyethylene glycol, polydopamine) of 4-5 nm spherical photocatalytic TiO2 NPs for the development of safer-by-design photocatalytic paint. Characterization of the so-formed TiO2 nanocomposites by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed the good grafting of the ligands on the TiO2 surface and an enhanced stability in water compared to the pristine TiO2 NPs. The photocatalytic activity of the TiO2 nanocomposites was investigated by following the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under irradiation. The results showed a modulation of the photocatalytic activity (decrease or increase of the MB degradation rate) as a function of the nature/binding strength of the bio-inspired coating on the oxide surface. Finally, the most promising nanocomposites were incorporated in paints on which preliminary chalking assays were performed after storage for one year in the dark or in interior daylight.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was employed for estimation of intrinsic dielectric loss of Zr0.8Sn0.2TiO4 (ZST) ceramics. Single-phase ZST dielectric resonators (DRs) with various synthesis parameters and, consequently, different extrinsic losses, were prepared by conventional ceramic technology. Even though the DRs exhibit a similar microstructure, their quality factor (Q is the inverse of dielectric loss tangent) measured in microwave (MW) domain at 6 GHz varies between 2500 and 8400. On the other hand, it was found that the THz dielectric loss is less sensitive to the sample preparation. The intrinsic losses (Q x f similar to 60 THz) of the ZST ceramics have been derived from THz data.

The equimolar oxide mixture beta-Ga2O3-alpha-Fe2O3 was subjected to high-energy ball milling (HEBM) with the aim to obtain the nanoscaled GaFeO3 ortho-ferrite. X-ray diffraction, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to evidence the phase structure and evolution of the equimolar nano-system beta-Ga2O3-alpha-Fe2O3 under mechanochemical activation, either as-prepared or followed by subsequent calcination. The mechanical activation was performed for 2 h to 12 h in normal atmosphere. After 12 h of HEBM, only nanoscaled (similar to 20 nm) gallium-doped alpha-Fe2O3 was obtained. The GaFeO3 structure was obtained as single phase, merely after calcination at 950 degrees C for a couple of hours, of the sample being subjected to HEBM for 12 h. This temperature is 450 degrees C lower than used in the conventional solid phase reaction to obtain gallium orthoferrite. The optical and magnetic properties of representative nanoscaled samples, revealing their multifunctional character, were presented.

In the last few decades, the intensive use of agricultural lands affected crop productivity and thus raised serious concerns due to competing demands for food to feed the ever-growing world population (projected to be 9.7 billion by 2050). In this context, the development of nanotechnology-based fertilizers for crop nutrition has been suggested as an alternative tool to overcome the drawbacks arising from the current agricultural practices. Unfortunathelly, there is little studies about the effects of nanomaterials on plants. In this study we presented the effect of hydroxyapatite (nHA) and iron oxides (nIO) nanoparticles obtained in Romania on growth and photosintesis of corn and winter wheat plants. The results show that hydroxyapatite (nHA) and iron oxides (nIO) treatments applied by watering the soil had a positive effect on the photosynthesis of maize and winter wheat plants. In the case of treatments with solutions of iron oxides a negative effect on the length of main root was observation, but a compensating effect was found by increasing root density. This and also the higher chlorophyll content. led to a positive effect on height of maize and winter wheat plants.

Commercial nanopowders of MgB2 were characterized from the viewpoint of granulometric distribution, structure, microstructure, and pH behavior in water. The powders are very different: a higher amount of the MgB2 phase with a lower tendency for agglomeration determines a higher rate of pH-increase. A higher rate of pH-increase usually produces a stronger antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, and Candida parapsilosis reference strains. The variation of the pH-increase rate suggests the possibility of temporo-spatial control of MgB2 bioactivity, although the contribution of other factors should not be neglected. Remarkably, the efficiency of the MgB2 powders is higher against biofilms than on microbes in the planktonic state. Further, our experiments confirm the antimicrobial efficiency of MgB2 in the in vitro tests against 29 methicillin resistant clinical S. aureus isolates and 33 vancomycin resistant E. faecium/faecalis strains, but in this case the biofilms are more resistant than planktonic cells. The MgB2 treatment of infected mice led to a significant decrease of E. coli colonization in liver, spleen and peritoneal liquid and it also caused changes in the intestinal microbiota. The activity of powders on HeLa and HT-29 tumor cell lines was assessed by inverted microscopy, flow cytometry, and evaluation of the cellular cycle. MgB2 inhibits tumor cell growth influencing DNA synthesis (S-phase). The obtained results indicate that the tested powders could provide promising solutions for the development of large-spectrum multifunctional antimicrobial and anti-biofilm agents, and/or for anti-cancer therapies. Wheat is the most cultivated plant and an important source of carbohydrates in the world. The Fe deficiency reduces quality of grain wheat leading to Fe deficiency in human. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of foliar and ground application of iron oxide nanoparticles (made in Romania) on growth components, yield and morphological and anatomical modifications of wheat plants. The ground application of iron oxide decreased height of plant, length of root and increased root volume and chlorophyll content more than foliar application. For the wheat plants fertilized with iron oxide nanoparticles, the decrease of root length was compensated by an increase of radicular density, which led to the development of new adventitious roots that could help the plants have a better uptake of water and nutrients. This meant that the production was not negatively influenced by the treatments performed, regardless of the application method. Our studies revealed that the fertilized wheat plants (foliar and root zone) presented anatomical changes in relation to control plants. The studies presented in this paper can contribute to achieve the necessary framework for the innovative development strategy regarding the efficiency of magnetic nanoparticles in foliar and ground fertilization of different crops.

UV-nanoimprint lithography is currently seen like an alternative to the classical lithographic techniques (electron beam or optical lithography) for large scale patterning in industrial applications. The present study is oriented on the fabrication of silicon nano-cones (pyramids) by using the UV-nanoimprint technique with polymeric stamps and deep reactive ion etching using the UV-cured resist as etching mask at cryogenic temperatures. The results show that the resist can act successfully as etching mask for the cryogenic silicon etching process.
