Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3-BiFeO3 (PZT-BFO) multilayer structures were realized by sol-gel on Pt/Si substrate and their electrical properties were investigated using top Pt, Au and Cu electrodes. All multilayers start and end with PZT films. The polarization-voltage and current-voltage hysteresis loops resemble to those encountered in case of antiferroelectric (AFE) films, although component materials are both ferroelectric (FE). The AFE-like behavior is more clearly visible in the case of three-layer structures of PZT-BFO-PZT type, and it is not dependent of the metal used as top electrode. After fatigue cycling the polarization hysteresis apparently changes from characteristic AFE double-loop to FE single loop, although the four switching current peaks characteristic for an AFE behavior are still present in the current hysteresis. These results suggest the presence of an AFE interfacial coupling between the PZT and BFO layers.

SBN thin films were grown on MgO and Silicon substrates by PLD and RF-PLD (radiofrequency assisted PLD) starting from single crystal Sr0.6Ba0.4Nb2O6 and ceramic Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 stoichiometric targets. Morphological and structural analyses were performed on the SBN layers by AFM and XRD and optical properties were measured by spectroellipsometry. The films composition was determined by Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry. The best set of experimental conditions for obtaining crystalline, c-axis preferential texture and with dominant 31 degrees in-plane orientation relative to the MgO (100) axis is identified.

PZT type films were prepared using the thermionic vacuum arc (TVA) method; a crucible filled PZT type powder (PbO/ZrO/TiO) was heated by a thermo-electron beam emitted by the circular cathode of the TVA gun. Applying high voltage potential (3000 +/- 200V) on the anode from a regulated HEINZINGER high voltage power supply the thermo-electrons were accelerated toward the anode crucible, evaporating the anode materials and initiating a plasma discharge. The morphology and the structure of the prepared films analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, showed nanostructured, smooth thin films with specific PZT stoichiometry.

Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) bulk ceramic synthesized by solid state reaction was used as target for thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and radiofrequency beam assisted PLD (RF-PLD). The X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the films exhibit a polycrystalline cubic structure with a distorted unit cell. Scanning Electron Microscopy investigations showed a columnar microstructure with size of spherical grains up to 150 nm. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristics of the BST films were performed by applying a DC voltage up to 5 V. A value of 280 for dielectric constant and 12.5% electrical tunability of the BST capacitor have been measured at room temperature.

Indium nitride is an attractive semiconductor material for optoelectronic applications, high-speed electronics and solar cells. We report successful deposition of polycrystalline InN thin films onto kapton polyimide flexible substrates by reactive RF magnetron sputtering method. The optical, structural and morphological characterization data are presented.

The magnetron sputtering method was used to obtain layers of indium tin oxide or hydroxyapatite on glass fiber woven and on reference glass plates. The layers were characterized by scanning microscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy and conductivity measurements. Hydrophilic properties of the woven samples were investigated by optical microscopy following the behavior of a water droplet upon the each of the samples. The change of the drop profile in time due to wetting of the fabric leads to the wetting kinetics. The most efficient treatments to improve the hydrophilic/wetting properties of the glass fiber woven were found.

The possibility to determine the kinetic parameters for temperature programmed reduction of Cu/Fe3O4 using only one TPR profile is analyzed. The same data are analyzed both by Friedman's iso-conversional method and another one previously derived and published by the authors. One shows that taking into account the experimental restrictions of Monti and Baiker, the Friedman's method, although gives values of the activation energy smaller than the real values, indicates a very similar dependence of these on the reduction degree. On the basis of some synthetic data one shows that the errors are very large when these recommendations are neglected, being possible to determine a false dependence on the degree of reduction.

Ceramics (Ba1-xSrx)TiO3, (BST) with x=0.25; 0.35; 0.40; 0.50; 0.60; 0.75; 0.90 were prepared by sintering method from BaCO3, SrCO3 and TiO2 of high purity (99.98%). The solid-state reaction was employed to obtain pure and doped BST ceramic samples. In order to improve the sintering process the following additives were added: 1.0 wt.% MgO and 1 wt.% MnO2. The sintering treatment was performed in die temperature range 1200 to 1260 degrees C, for 2 h. Archimedean method was used for ceramic density measurements, which was found to depend linearly on strontium content: rho(x)=5.4(2)-0.8(8).x, (g/cm(3)). SEM, EDX and XRD methods were used for sample characterization. Morphology, pores and grain size distribution of both pure and doped ceramics were investigated by SEM analysis. A bimodal grain distribution could be observed in pure BST for x <= 0.25, whereas a uniform one was noticed for doped samples of x = 0.25. Well faceted grains of similar to 5 pm size, Could be seen for x=0.75 samples. Pores size has grown with the increase of Sr content. X-ray diffraction patterns have shown a dominant perovskite structure and some other minor phases. Dielectric permittivity and loss were investigated at 1kHz, in the temperature range - 150 to + 150 degrees C, at a pace of similar to 2 degrees C /min. Sharp transitions, with higher peaks values of permittivity were noticed with the increase of the sintering temperature. A shift Of the Curie points to lower values was noticed with the increase of Sr content, according to the equation: Tc = 127.4-331.x. Measured at room temperature, in the frequency range of similar to 1 GHz, permittivity was found to increase and losses to decrease with the sintering temperature. For x <= 0.35 permittivity of the samples, being in the ferroelectric phase could not be measured in microwave domain at room temperature. Calcium phosphate compounds have been studied for biomedical applications due to chemical and structural similarity to the mineral phase of bone and tooth. The composition, physico-chemical properties, crystal size and morphology of synthetic apatite are extremely sensitive to preparative conditions and sometimes it resulted into non-stoichiometric calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (HAp) powders. The present paper describes the synthesis of calcium phosphate ceramics powders via a sol-gel method, The powders were sintered at 600 and 800 degrees C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) were used for characterization and evaluation of the phase composition, morphology and particle size of samples, The functional group of the coatings were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The XRD analysis revealed a well crystallized HA structure at both temperatures. At 800 degrees C a small amount of CaO (about 0.4%) was detected. The mean crystallite size, determined from the breadth of the diffraction lines, increases from 30 nm at 600 degrees C to about 110 nm at 800 degrees C. FTIR spectra showed the presence of various PO43- and OH- groups present in the powders. Osteoblast cells were used to determine cell proliferation, viability and citotoxicity after interaction with the prepared bioceramics, by MTT (3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, a tetrazole) assay. We note that the viability of HAp-600 starts to decrease after 12h, while the viability of HAp-800 decreases after 6h.

Polymer-like organic thin films obtained by plasma techniques are of wide interest for various applications. Polythiophene-like thin films were deposited by plasma polymerization in a parallel plate radiofrequency reactor starting from thiophene vapors. The optical properties of the films were obtained from spectroscopic ellipsometry, in the 250-1250 nm range. The calculated band gap is in agreement with a polythiophene-like material consisting of cross-linking of oligomers. The presence of functional groups and film stability against oxidation is analyzed by FTIR spectrometry. The monitoring of functional groups incorporation during the film deposition was done by analyzing the integral intensities of specific absorption bands and led to the conclusion that homogeneous films are obtained whatever the process duration.
