This work focuses on the temperature evolution of the martensitic phase epsilon (hexagonal close packed) induced by the severe plastic deformation via High Speed High Pressure Torsion method in Fe57Mn27Si11Cr5 (at %) alloy. The iron rich alloy crystalline structure, magnetic and transport properties were investigated on samples subjected to room temperature High Speed High Pressure Torsion incorporating 1.86 degree of deformation and also hot-compression. Thermo-resistivity as well as thermomagnetic measurements indicate an antiferromagnetic behavior with the Neel temperature (T-N) around 244 K, directly related to the austenitic gamma-phase. The sudden increase of the resistivity on cooling below the Neel temperature can be explained by an increased phonon-electron interaction. In-situ magnetic and electric transport measurements up to 900 K are equivalent to thermal treatments and lead to the appearance of the bcc-ferrite-like type phase, to the detriment of the epsilon(hcp) martensite and the gamma (fcc) austenite phases.

The crystalline structure and Fe local environment in a Co-doped Ni-Fe-Ga Heusler alloy, prepared by the melt-spinning technique, were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and EXAFS at room and low temperatures. The characteristic temperatures of the austenite-martensite phase transitions were determined by differential scanning calorimetry via cooling and heating cycles of the alloy ribbons. As shown by room-temperature XRD, the austenitic phase of the alloy has the chemically ordered L2(1) Heusler structure. This was confirmed by EXAFS, although this technique was not able to conclusively distinguish between the L2(1) and B2 structures of the austenite for the analyzed alloy. The low-temperature martensitic phase and its structural evolution towards austenite with increasing temperature were studied by high-energy X-ray diffraction, which evinced the martensite modulation. However, the Fe environment could be fitted by EXAFS with the tetragonal L1(0) structure of the non-modulated martensite. This proves that the martensite modulation has structural effects on a long-range scale, without significant changes in the short-range order around the atoms. The changes in the local structure around iron on martensitic transformation were correlated with changes in the electronic structure, described by XANES spectroscopy at the Fe K edge.

Composites of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles dispersed in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix were prepared by a molding process. Two types of samples were obtained by free polymerization with randomly dispersed particles and by polymerization in an applied magnetic field. The magnetite nanoparticles were obtained from magnetic micrograins of acicular goethite (alpha-FeOOH) and spherical hematite (alpha-Fe2O3), as demonstrated by XRD measurements. The evaluation of morphological and compositional properties of the PDMS:Fe3O4 composites, performed by SEM and EDX, showed that the magnetic particles were uniformly distributed in the polymer matrix. Addition of magnetic dispersions promotes an increase of thermal conductivity compared with pristine PDMS, while further orienting the powders in a magnetic field during the polymerization process induces a decrease of the thermal conductivity compared with the un-oriented samples. The shape of the magnetic dispersions is an important factor, acicular dispersions providing a higher value for thermal conductivity compared with classic commercial powders with almost spherical shapes.

Advanced functionality in molecular electronics and spintronics is orchestrated by exact molecular arrangements at metal surfaces, but the strategies for constructing such arrangements remain limited. Here, we report the synthesis and surface hybridization of a cyclophane that comprises two pyrene groups fastened together by two ferrocene pillars. Crystallographic structure analysis revealed pyrene planes separated by similar to 352 pm and stacked in an eclipsed geometry that approximates the rare configuration of AA-stacked bilayer graphene. We deposited this cyclophane onto surfaces of Cu(111) and Co(111) at submonolayer coverage and studied the resulting hybrid entities with scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). We found distinct characteristics of this cyclophane on each metal surface: on non-magnetic Cu(111), physisorption occurred and the two pyrene groups remained electronically coupled to each other; on ferromagnetic Co(111) nanoislands, chemisorption occurred and the two pyrene groups became electronically decoupled. Spin-polarized STM measurements revealed that the ferrocene groups had spin polarization opposite to that of the surrounding Co metal, while the pyrene stack had no spin polarization. Comparisons to the non-stacked analogue comprising only one pyrene group bolster our interpretation of the cyclophane's STM features. The design strategy presented herein can be extended to realize versatile, three-dimensional platforms in single-molecule electronics and spintronics.

The first aim of this study was to develop an ATRP process for methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization using Fe(CO)(5) as co-initiator. The kinetics analysis of the reaction in solution confirmed the controlled characteristic of the polymerization process. The process displays a slow initiation step and presents bimolecular termination reactions at higher molecular weights, confirmed by NMR analysis. Also, these observations are sustained by GPC, FT-IR, and XPS analyses, explaining the rather unusual dispersity values (1.4) for an ATRP reaction. The use of formic acid, which shifts the equilibrium towards Fe2+ species affording a quasi-controlled controlled polymerization process, is a key element in achieving control over the reaction. The Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio at the end of the reaction, determined by XPS analysis, suggests the possibility to generate magnetic iron oxide particles. Therefore, the synthesis strategy was adapted for use in the suspension polymerization process of MMA which permitted the production of magnetic PMMA particles through a facile one-pot approach, using only an ammonia treatment stage. The obtained PMMA particles, characterized by SEM, XPS, TEM, TGA, and XRD analyses, have porous characteristics and magnetic properties which makes them good candidates as catalyst supports, separation processes, or biomedical applications.

The magnetic properties of thin-film multilayers [Fe/Py]/FeMn/Py are investigated as a function of temperature and thickness of the antiferromagnetic FeMn spacer using SQUID magnetometry. The observed behavior differs substantially for the structures with 6 nm and 15 nm FeMn spacers. While the 15 nm FeMn structure exhibits exchange pinning of both ferromagnetic layers in the entire measurement temperature interval from 5 to 300 K, the 6 nm FeMn structure becomes exchange de-pinned in the vicinity of room temperature. The depinned state is characterized by a single hysteresis loop centered at zero field and having enhanced magnetic coercivity. The observed properties are explained in terms of finite-size effects and possible ferromagnetic interlayer coupling through the thin antiferromagnetic spacer.

Magnetite (Fe3O4) and ferrite (MFe2O4, M = Mn, Zn) hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticles with various shapes and sizes were synthesized by high-temperature reaction of organic precursor solutions. Spherical, cubic, hexagonal, and octahedral shapes and sizes ranging from 10 to 100 nm were obtained. It has been proven that the reported high capability of tailoring the shape and the size of the surface-coated nanoparticles allows controlling a variety of properties that are relevant to many potential applications. Structurally well-formed hydrophobic magnetic nanoparticles with high saturation magnetization values are reported. The hydrophobic oleic acid shell was successfully transformed by a simple and environmentally friendly oxidative scission method into azelaic acid. The morphostructural characteristics, size distributions, chemical composition, and magnetic properties of the resulting hydrophilic nanoparticles were investigated by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, superconducting quantum interference device, and vibrating sample magnetometry. Magnetic hyperthermia measurements have been performed in a specially designed sample holder placed in an inductor with copper windings assuring alternating magnetic fields of safely biological amplitude-frequency products. The optimal shape with a specific size range for nanoparticles dispersed in various carriers providing the best heating efficiency is reported.

Three commercial powders of MgB2 were tested in vitro by MTS and LDH cytotoxicity tests on the HS27 dermal cell line. Depending on powders, the toxicity concentrations were established in the range of 8.3-33.2 mu g/ml. The powder with the lowest toxicity limit was embedded into polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a biocompatible and biodegradable polymer, for two different concentrations. The self-replenishing MgB2-PVP composite materials were coated on substrate materials (plastic foil of the reservoir and silicon tubes) composing a commercial urinary catheter. The influence of the PVP-reference and MgB2-PVP novel coatings on the bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Enterococcus faecium DMS 13590, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, in planktonic and biofilm state was assessed in vitro at 6, 24, and 48 h of incubation time. The MgB2-PVP coatings are efficient both against planktonic microbes and microbial biofilms. Results open promising applications for the use of MgB2 in the design of anti-infective strategies for different biomedical devices and systems.

Niobia-based magnetic nanocomposites were prepared by covering magnetite nanoparticle cores (Fe3O4, MNP) with either Nb2O5 or Nb2O5-SiO2 shells using a two-step procedure. In the first step magnetite nanoparticles were prepared by the coprecipitation method. The second step involved their coverage with either Nb2O5 shells, through a precipitation method, or with Nb2O5-SiO2 shells, through a sol-gel protocol followed by precipitation in the presence of the CTAB surfactant. The obtained materials were exhaustively characterised by X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, ICP-OES, DRIFT and Raman spectroscopy, and CO2 - and NH3-TPD measurements, and investigated for glucose dehydration to HMF. The catalytic performances were directly correlated to the nature of the supported niobia phases, which, in turn, has been dictated by the niobia content and the preparation route. The high selectivity to HMF was correlated with to the large pseudohexagonal niobium oxide (TT-Nb2O5) phase while the catalytic activity was directly correlated to the small nanoparticles size. A proper combination of these features led to an optimum catalytic system for the selective production of HMF through glucose dehydration. A third important feature making the developed catalyst promising is its magnetic property, ensured by the magnetite nanoparticles core. This allowed its easy separation from the reaction products.

Melt spun ribbons of Mn53Al45C2 and Mn52Al46C2 have been synthesized by rapid quenching of the melt with the purpose of monitoring the epsilon-tau phase transformation to show technologically feasible ways to increase magnetic parameters and to illustrate the viability of these alloys as the next generation of rare earth (RE)-free magnets. By differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), activation energies and temperatures of onset of the epsilon-tau phase transformation were obtained. Structural analysis was performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the resulting XRD patterns were quantitatively assessed using full profile Rietveld-type analysis. Appropriate annealing was performed in order to enable the epsilon-tau phase transformation. While hcp epsilon-phase was found to be predominant in the as-cast samples, after appropriate annealing, the tetragonal tau-phase, the one that furnishes the relevant magnetic response, was found to be predominant with an abundance of about 90%. The data suggested a mechanism of hcp epsilon-phase decomposition controlled by the segregation towards the interfacial regions, having the rate of transformation governed by antiphase boundary diffusion processes. Magnetic measurements of annealed sample Mn53Al45C2, consisting of predominant tetragonal tau-phase, showed high values of magnetization and increased coercivity, consistent with an energy product of about 10 MGOe, similar with previously reported magnetization measurements, providing further insight into the realization of future class of RE-free low-cost permanent magnets.
