Nanoparticles of iron oxide embedded in C(60) matrices are synthesized by co-evaporation of iron and C(60)-fullerene, and analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy and MOKE magnetometry. C(60) molecules in the neighborhood of the iron oxide nanoclusters transfer charge to the oxide, and the charge deficit fully delocalizes onto the fullerene molecules. The composition of the nanoclusters of iron oxide is similar to both hematite and magnetite, in comparable proportions. One analyzes the amplitude of the pre-edge XANES peak, yielding the average ionization state of absorbing Fe atoms, which is confirmed by the simulations of XANES spectra.

(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 doped with 8 mol% BaTiO3 (BNT-BT0.08) powder was prepared by an acetate-alkoxide sol-gel method. The evolution of the structure and microstructure of the precursor gel, heated at various temperatures as well as, the piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties of BNT-BT0.08 ceramics were studied. Nanopowder of BNT-BT0.08 with average particles size of 30 nm and, crystallized on the perovskitic structure of (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3, were obtained from the precursor gel by heating at 600 degrees C, 3 h in air. The ceramics of composition 0.92(Bi0.5Na10.5)TiO3-0.08BaTiO(3), manufactured from the as-prepared nanostructured powder, present good dielectric properties (epsilon(r,max) = 4000-4500, tan delta = 0.02-0.03) and high mechanical quality factor (Q(m) similar to 500). Gold layers were deposited at oblique incidence onto glass plates. A B30.2 Hochvakuum Bedampfungsanlage equipment was used in this aim. The deposition conditions were chosen in order to obtain nanostructured layers. Correlations were found among these conditions and the corresponding nomograms were then obtained. Examples of such depositions were given and the layers structure was characterized and additionally supported by observing the molecular alignment given in the liquid crystal cells obtained with these gold layers.

Pt-ZnO-Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3-Pt (PZT-ZnO) heterostructures were fabricated by using a sol-gel process. Capacitance-voltage measurements performed on a wide temperature range (20-450 K) have revealed the presence of a hysteresis that undergo a change of direction from clockwise at temperatures below 350 K to counter-clockwise at higher temperatures. In the first case, the hysteresis is produced by charge injection, similar to the case of classical metal-oxide-semiconductor capacitors. In the last case, the hysteresis is the fingerprint of polarization reversal, as reported for metal-ferroelectric-semiconductor (MFS) structures based on n-Si. The memory window at 450 K is about 6 V. This result suggests that PZT-ZnO MFS heterostructures can be used for memory devices working at elevated temperatures, in which the ZnO plays the role of the semiconductor.

The surface characterization of 304L stainless steel for orthopedic implant applications, unmodified and modified with poly (vinyl) alcohol (PVA) in physiological serum (PS) is discussed according to electrochemical measurements, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM / EDS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. The results obtained through polarization curves indicate that PVA reduces anodic dissolution and also decrease of the corrosion current (i(corr)); decrease of the corrosion current (i(corr)) was associated with a shift of corrosion potential (E-corr) to a less negative values; the polarization resistance(R-p) increases for the surfaces which were treated in physiological serum in the presence of PVA. SEM / EDS and XPS analysis showed that the surface layer which was formed on 304L stainless steel consists of PVA containing of small amount of other elements, such as: Na and Cl.

Cobalt-doped vanadium oxide thin layers prepared by pulsed laser ablation are investigated from the following points of view: (1) the chemical states by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), (2) the local atomic order by X-ray absorption fine structure at both vanadium and cobalt K-edges, (3) the morphology of the films by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and (4) the magnetic properties by magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). The chemical composition of the host matrix was found to be close to VO2 at the sample surface, with V2O3 in the bulk. Co ions are found near the surface in high ionisation states Co4+ (for the samples synthesised in a high vacuum condition, denoted by VO1), or with Co(4-)+ (for the samples synthesised in an oxygen atmosphere, denoted by VO2), whereas in the bulk, Co1.5+ is obtained for VO1 and Co2+ is obtained for VO2. The AFM revealed nanoparticles with sizes 10-25 nm for VO1 samples, whereas a few bigger nanoparticles are observed for VO2 samples. The VO1 samples presented high coercitive fields with a relatively low saturation magnetisation at room temperature, superposed with a superparamagnetic component attributed to the observed nanoparticles, whereas the VO2 samples presented double-loop hysteresis curves, indicating the co-existence of two kinds of magnetic moieties with antiparallel coupling at zero applied field. The proposed two magnetic phases are Co-doped V2O3 and VO2.

Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C: H) films were grown by radio-frequency (1.78 MHz) plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition technique onto medical grade Ti6Al4V substrates. By varying the deposition pressure (13.33 Pa and 53.33 Pa, respectively) and methane dilution (20% and 60%, respectively) several types of carbonic films were obtained, presenting different bonding structures, surface energies and morphological features reflected in their biological behaviour. FTIR, Raman, UV-Vis, XPS and AFM measurements were used for characterizing these structures. The surface energy was determined by contact angle measurements, and their thrombogenicity was tested by the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) method. We have noticed that at the same values of methane in argon dilution but at different pressure values, the film structure was totally changed: soft polymer-like carbon (PLC) type at the higher pressure and hard diamond-like carbon (DLC) type at the lower pressure. Raman spectroscopy and XPS suggested that the highest sp(3) ratio (similar to 52%), was found for DLC films prepared in a 60% methane dilution in argon. It has been found that for both PLC and DLC structures the surface energy has a decreasing tendency with the methane concentration increase in the deposition atmosphere. Excellent aPTT results were obtained for the DLC-60 (18.6.+/- 0.3 min) and PLC-20 (17.4 +/- 0.5 min) structures, superior to those recorded for Ti6Al4V and PMMA commercial materials. These values recommend the prepared carbonic structures for medical applications: harder coatings (DLC) for metal prostheses (heart valves, acetabular cups etc.), while softer and flexible coatings (PLC) for the textile vessels or stents biofunctionalization.

The ability of a sol-gel route for the synthesis of cobalt doped ZnO (Zn 1-xCoxO, x = 0.04-0.11) films grown on Si (100) and glass substrates is investigated. A homogeneous and stable Zn (1-x) CoxO sol was prepared by dissolving zinc nitrate hexahydrate and cobalt acetate tetrahydrate in a PVP (polyvinylpyrrolidone) solution, followed by annealing at 800 degrees C. Local structure studies of the Zn1-xCoxO thin films by XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) and EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) proved the co-existence of a few amount of small metal cobalt aggregates with Co in non-stoichiometric ConOm aggregates, with n > m, and m similar to 4. Low temperature magneto-optical Kerr effect (Faraday rotation) measurements of the magnetization versus field give a direct proof of a superparamagnetic behavior of the magnetic aggregates and allowed an estimate of the number of magnetically active atoms in Co aggregates, which is close to the number of Co excess atoms inferred from XANES and EXAFS considerations: n - m similar to 3 atoms per aggregate. To this main superparamagnetic phase, a weak ferromagnetic phase with coercitive field of similar to 50 Oe is superimposed, most probably due to metal cobalt nanoclusters.

Various approaches have been reported during the last decade to enhance the photo-catalytic and super-hydrophilic characteristics of the intrinsic TiO2 materials. Results on the photo-degradation activity of RF-sputtered nitrogen-doped titania thin films are presented here with respect to two environmental pollutants in gas- and liquid phases, as a function of dopant concentration. This study was accomplished by monitoring the time dependence of pollutant concentration in contact with the films, both under UV and solar light illumination. The synergic effects of surface morphology, crystalline and electronic structure of the materials are discussed in relation with the observed experimental facts. The results presented here show a close correlation between the oxidative power of the films and their previously reported wettability features. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
