The hydroxyapatite and copper-doped hydroxyapatite coatings (Ca10-xCux(PO4)6(OH)2; xCu = 0, 0.03; HAp and 3CuHAp) were obtained by the vacuum deposition technique. Then, both coatings were analyzed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and water contact angle techniques. Information regarding the in vitro antibacterial activity and biological evaluation were obtained. The XRD studies confirmed that the obtained thin films consist of a single phase associated with hydroxyapatite (HAp). The obtained 2D and 3D SEM images did not show cracks or other types of surface defects. The FTIR studies' results proved the presence of vibrational bands characteristic of the hydroxyapatite structure in the studied coating. Moreover, information regarding the HAp and 3CuHAp surface wettability was obtained by water contact angle measurements. The biocompatibility of the HAp and 3CuHAp coatings was evaluated using the HeLa and MG63 cell lines. The cytotoxicity evaluation of the coatings was performed by assessing the cell viability through the MTT assay after incubation with the HAp and 3CuHAp coatings for 24, 48, and 72 h. The results proved that the 3CuHAp coatings exhibited good biocompatible activity for all the tested intervals. The ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa 27853 ATCC (P. aeruginosa) cells to adhere to and develop on the surface of the HAp and 3CuHAp coatings was investigated using AFM studies. The AFM studies revealed that the 3CuHAp coatings inhibited the formation of P. aeruginosa biofilms. The AFM data indicated that P. aeruginosa's attachment and development on the 3CuHAp coatings were significantly inhibited within the first 24 h. Both the 2D and 3D topographies showed a rapid decrease in attached bacterial cells over time, with a significant reduction observed after 72 h of exposure. Our studies suggest that 3CuHAp coatings could be suitable candidates for biomedical uses such as the development of new antimicrobial agents.

This work presents the synthesis of tungsten nanoparticles (W NPs) using a cluster source based on magnetron sputtering combined with gas aggregation (MSGA), operated with up to 81% H-2 in the hydrogen/argon mixture used as a working gas. The results show that, with up to 41% H-2 in discharge, the synthesis rate increases by more than 60 times, rapidly decreasing for over 50% H-2 in discharge. The W dust is still produced for H-2-dominated discharges (81%), and its deposition rate is small but not negligible (0.02 mg/h). The obtained W NPs are isolated, with the diameter decreasing from 50 nm to 15 nm when the amount of H-2 in discharge is smaller than 41%. Over this value, the particles tend to agglomerate, forming structures similar to film-like deposits. Also, the diameter of the dust spots deposited on substrates depends on the H-2 content of the discharge. This allows the efficient coating of substrates up to 26 mm wide by translating them in front of the MSGA cluster source exit aperture. Additionally, for 41% H-2 in discharge, the influence of synthetic air leaks (0%-8.2%) in discharge was investigated. The deposition rate decreases rapidly (ceasing for around 6% air in discharge), and the obtained nanoparticles tend to agglomerate on the substrate (at 3.3% air content, the dust deposit has the aspect of a near-continuous film). Chemical composition investigations show a pronounced tendency for oxidation, nitridation, and oxynitride formation in the presence of air leaks.

Magnesium and magnesium thin alloy films were deposited using a thermionic vacuum arc (TVA), which has multiple applications in the field of metallic electrodes for diodes and batteries or active corrosion protection. An improved laser-induced TVA (LTVA) method favors the crystallization processes of the deposited magnesium-based films because the interaction between laser and plasma discharge changes the thermal energy during photonic processes due to the local temperature variation. Plasma diagnosis based on current discharge measurements suggests an inelastic collision between the laser beam and the atoms from the plasma discharge. The morphology and surface properties of the obtained thin films differ between these two methods. While the amorphous character is dominant for TVA thin films, enabling a smooth surface, the LTVA method produces rough surfaces with prominent crystallinity, less hydrophobic character and lower surface energy. The smooth surfaces obtained by the TVA methods produce metallic electrodes with good electrical contact, ensuring better diodes and battery charge transport. Both methods allow uniform magnesium alloys to be obtained, but the laser used in the LTVA on the discharge plasma controls the added metal or element ratio. (c) 2024 Chongqing University. A novel scaffold for in situ electrochemical detection of cell biomarkers was developed using electrospun nanofibers and commercial adhesive polymeric membranes. The electrochemical sensing of cell biomarkers requires the cultivation of the cells on/near the (bio)sensor surface in a manner to preserve an appropriate electroactive available surface and to avoid the surface passivation and sensor damage. This can be achieved by employing biocompatible nanofiber meshes that allow the cells to have a normal behavior and do not alter the electrochemical detection. For a better mechanical stability and ease of handling, nylon 6/6 nanofibers were collected on commercial polymeric membranes, at an optimal fiber density, obtaining a double-layered platform. To demonstrate the functionality of the fabricated scaffold, the screening of cellular stress has been achieved integrating melanoma B16-F10 cells and the (bio)sensor components on the transducer whereas the melanin exocytosis was successfully quantified using a commercial electrode. Either directly on the surface of the (bio)sensor or spatially detached from it, the integration of cell cultures in biosensing platforms based on electrospun nanofibers represents a powerful bioanalytical tool able to provide real-time information about the biomarker release, enzyme activity or inhibition, and monitoring of various cellular events.

Infections related to orthopedic/stomatology surgery are widely recognized as a significant health concern. Therefore, the development of new materials with superior biological properties and good stability could represent a valuable alternative to the classical treatments. In this paper, the fluorine-substituted hydroxyapatite (FHAp) suspension, with the chemical formula Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2-2xF2x (where x = 0.05), was prepared using a modified coprecipitation technique. Stability studies were conducted by zeta potential and ultrasound measurements for the first time. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of FHAp powders displayed a hexagonal structure akin to that of pure hydroxyapatite (HAp). The XPS general spectrum revealed peaks corresponding to the constituent elements of fluorine-substituted hydroxyapatite such as calcium, phosphorus, oxygen, and fluorine. The purity of the obtained FHAp samples was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) studies. The FHAp morphology was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies were performed in order to study the vibrational properties of the FHAp samples. The FHAp suspensions were tested for antibacterial activity against reference strains such as Staphylococcus aureus 25923 ATCC, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. Additionally, the biocompatibility of the FHAp suspensions was assessed using human fetal osteoblastic cells (hFOB 1.19 cell line). The results of our biological tests suggest that FHAp suspensions are promising candidates for the future development of new biocompatible and antimicrobial agents for use in the biomedical field.

In this study, we report on the development of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and samarium-doped hydroxyapatite (SmHAp) nanoparticles using a cost-effective method and their biological effects on a bone-derived cell line MC3T3-E1. The physicochemical and biological features of HAp and SmHAp nanoparticles are explored. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed that no additional peaks were observed after the integration of samarium (Sm) ions into the HAp structure. Valuable information regarding the molecular structure and morphological features of nanoparticles were obtained by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The elemental composition obtained by using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the presence of the HAp constituent elements, Ca, O, and P, as well as the presence and uniform distribution of Sm3+ ions. Both HAp and SmHAp nanoparticles demonstrated biocompatibility at concentrations below 25 mu g/mL and 50 mu g/mL, respectively, for up to 72 h of exposure. Cell membrane integrity was preserved following treatment with concentrations up to 100 mu g/mL HAp and 400 mu g/mL SmHAp, confirming the role of Sm3+ ions in enhancing the cytocompatibility of HAp. Furthermore, our findings reveal a positive, albeit limited, effect of SmHAp nanoparticles on the actin dynamics, osteogenesis, and cell migration compared to HAp nanoparticles. Importantly, the biological results highlight the potential role of Sm3+ ions in maintaining cellular balance by mitigating disruptions in Ca2+ homeostasis induced by HAp nanoparticles. Therefore, our study represents a significant contribution to the safety assessment of both HAp and SmHAp nanoparticles for biomedical applications focused on bone regeneration.

Recently, a smart strategy for two-dimensional (2D) materials synthesis has emerged, namely space-confined chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Its extreme case is the microreactor method, in which the growth substrate is face-to-face stacked on the source substrate. In order to grow 2D transition metal dichalcogenides by this method, transition metal oxides, dispersed in very small amounts on the source substrate, are used as source materials in most of the published reports. In this paper, a colloidal dispersion of MoS2 in saline solution is used and MoS2 nanosheets with various shapes, sizes (between 5 and 60 mu m) and thicknesses (2-4 layers) have been synthesized. Small MoS2 flakes (regular or defective) are present on the surface of the nanosheets. Catalytic sites, undercoordinated atoms located at the edges of MoS2 flakes and nanosheets, are produced in a high number by a layer-plus-island (Stranski-Krastanov) growth mechanism. Several double-resonance Raman bands (at 147, 177, 187, 225, 247, 375 cm(-1)) are assignable to single phonon processes in which the excited electron is elastically scattered on a defect. The narrow 247 cm(-1) peak is identified as a topological defect-activated peak. These findings highlight the potential of defect engineering in material property optimization, particularly for solar water splitting applications.

We report on the Matrix Assisted Pulsed Laser Evaporation, laser technology for depositing biocompatible, antimicrobial, hydrophilic, and biodegradable complex hybrid polymeric system loaded with essential cypress-oil and magnetite nanoparticles as resorbable implants, capable of targeting possible hyperthermia applications, an anticancer moderate field heating therapy. Magnetite nanoparticles based on iron oxide (Fe3O4) coated with Cypress essential oil (denoted: Fe3O4- Cypress) and embedded in PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (denoted: PLGA-Fe3O4- Cypress-) and PLGA - poly(3,4ethylene dioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrene sulfonate) anions) (PEDOT: PSS) mixture (denoted: PLGA-Fe3O4- Cypress- PEDOT: PSS) were used as MAPLE targets. The controlled drug delivery of the active Cypress oil, an antimicrobial therapeutic agent from Fe3O4- Cypress nanoparticles could be possible by applying an external radio frequency (RF) magnetic field. The Fe3O4-Cypress-based powders as well as the final hybrid coatings have been characterized in terms of stoichiometry, morphology, magnetic, antimicrobial properties, biocompatibility, and response to external physical stimuli. FTIR analyses confirmed the quasi-stoichiometric laser transfer of organic compounds while the XRD evidenced the semicrystalline structure of deposited thin films. SEM and AFM images evidence that conductive polymer addition led to the films' relief flattening and a decrease in the coatings' thickness and roughness by changing the polymeric packaging. The samples containing conductive polymer exhibited 3 times higher current and corrosion rate values. All coatings are hydrophilic and revealed enhanced cellular viability when cultured with osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. The composite structures exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus), and Gram -negative (Escherichia coli ) bacteria, as well as to the opportunistic yeast Candida albicans.

We investigate the transport and energy spectrum properties of a three-dimensional high-order topological structure formed by stacking two-dimensional square diatomic Chern insulator lattices. Electron-hole symmetry and the energy spectrum degeneracy at individual points in the semimetallic phase are proven to be due to chiral and antiunitary symmetries in the periodic system. Additionally, we explore the influence of boundary conditions in a slab system with varying surface atom connectivity, and we demonstrate analytically the presence of zero-energy surface states in specific configurations. Moreover, we describe the emergence of two chiral hinge states driven by a perpendicular phase in the nanowire geometry. Next, the quantum Hall resistance is computed in the cross-configuration of a four-lead device. In this paper, we demonstrate that the trajectories of hinge states, determined by the number of layers in parallelepiped finite structure, give rise to fractional Hall plateaus.

Magneto-optical measurements enable the identification of Fe2+ and Fe3+ in the R and S blocks of BaFe12O19 Mhexaferrite powder obtained by sol -gel processing, followed by thermal annealing at 900 C for 3 hours. The ferromagnetic phase is evidenced by the spin-majority configuration (Fe3+) due to their unpaired electrons between d -d orbitals, while the Fe2+ in the low spin possesses diamagnetic behavior strongly dependent on the surrounded crystal field. Additionally, the irradiation with gamma rays changes the ratio between Fe2+/Fe3+, mainly on the surface of BaFe12O19 nanocrystals. These changes were confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements, in which the concentration of Fe2+ increased from 69% to 82%, while the one of Fe3+ decreased from 31% to 18%. he thermoluminescent measurements reveal the same changes of Fe3+ in Fe2+ by electron capturing during irradiation, which is released as a red emission after recombination processes. The changes are explained by the increasing of some Fe-O bonds along the c-axis, mainly due to breaking a part of these bonds. The X-ray analysis confirms the changing of the parameters for the BaFe12O19 hexagonal structure.
