Floquet topological insulators (FTIs) are materials which undergo topological phase transitions under a time periodic perturbation causing time reversal symmetry breaking. In this Letter, we propose a spin filter model based on a FTI realized by irradiating a honeycomb lattice with circularly polarized light, in the presence of intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. The main ingredient of our proposed mechanism of Floquet topological spin filter (FTSF) implementation is the presence of an on-site staggered potential which controls independently the topological phases of the two existent spin states. After giving a numerical example of the occurrence of the FTSF phase, we argue that the origin of the FTSF phase resides in the spatial inversion symmetry breaking due to the presence of a staggered potential. The light helicity degree of freedom may be used to select the filtered spin state. Moreover, due to the topological properties of our model, the spin will be purely filtered in a Hall transport experiment. We discuss also the experimental feasibility.

Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) is a promising material for thin-film solar cells due to its suitable band gap, high absorption coefficient, and composition of earth-abundant and nontoxic elements. In this study, we prepared CZTSe thin films from Cu/SnSe2 and ZnSe stacks using a two-step annealing process. Initially, Cu-Sn-Se (CTSe) films were synthesized by sequential deposition and annealing of Cu and SnSe2 precursors in either a selenium (Se) or tin-selenium (Sn+Se) atmosphere. After the deposition of a ZnSe layer on top of CTSe films, the stack underwent a second annealing process, again in either a Se or Sn+Se atmosphere, resulting in four distinct annealing combinations: Se -> Se, Sn+Se -> Se, Se -> Sn+Se, and Sn+Se -> Sn+Se. The first annealing step enabled the formation of CTSe, while the second annealing step, performed after ZnSe deposition, led to the formation of the CZTSe phase. Comprehensive characterization including grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and electrical measurements was conducted. GIXRD and Raman analysis revealed kesterite CZTSe phase peaks, with some samples showing a split in the main peak at similar to 27 degrees (2 theta), indicating the presence of Cu x Se and ZnSe secondary phases. SEM analysis showed the impact of Sn and Se annealing on grain size, with larger grains observed in films annealed in Sn+Se atmospheres, particularly in the second heat treatment process. EDS results displayed consistent elemental composition across samples, with varying Cu/(Zn+Sn), Zn/Sn and Se/metal ratios influencing the band gap values from 1.09 to 1.63 eV. Hall measurements indicated p-type conductivity with carrier concentrations between 1016 and 1023 cm-3. These results highlight the effectiveness of our two-step annealing process, particularly the Sn+Se atmosphere, in optimizing CZTSe thin films for potential use in high-efficiency thin-film solar cells.

Iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized using a vortex microfluidic system and subsequently functionalized with a primary shell of salicylic acid, recognized for its ability to increase the stability and biocompatibility of coated materials. In the second stage, the vortex platform was placed in a magnetic field to facilitate the growth and development of a porous silica shell. The selected drug for this study was micafungin, an antifungal agent well regarded for its effectiveness in combating fungal infections and identified as a priority compound by the World Health Organization (WHO). The resulting nanocomposite system was characterized using various techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). The synthesis method produced nanoparticles with dimensions of 5-7 nm, highlighting the advantages of the chosen approach. A desorption profile was established using a continuous-flow, UV-Vis analysis system, indicating that the bioactive compound was released slowly; after two hours, approximately 50% of the loaded micafungin was detected in the release medium. Furthermore, the results obtained from the FT-ICR MS analysis provided molecular-level confirmation, thereby supporting the release mechanism of micafungin from the nanosystem.

TiO2-C (carbon) hybrid materials are promising electrocatalyst supports because the presence of TiO2 results in enhanced stability. Use of new types of carbonaceous materials such as reduced graphene oxide instead of traditional active carbon provides certain benefits. Although the rutile polymorph of TiO2 seems to have the most beneficial properties in these hybrid materials, the anatase type is more frequent in TiO2-rGO composites, especially in graphite oxide (GO) derived ones, as GO has several properties which may interfere with rutile formation. To explore and evaluate these peculiarities and their influence on the composite formation, we compared TiO2-C systems formulated with GO and Black Pearls (BP) carbon. Various physicochemical methods, such as attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR)-, solid state NMR-, Raman- and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy, etc. were used to characterize the samples from the different stages of our multistep sol-gel synthesis. Our experiments demonstrated that utilization of GO is indeed feasible for composite preparation, although its sodium contamination has to be removed during the synthesis. On the other hand, high temperature treatment and/or solvothermal treatment during composite synthesis resulted in decomposition of the functional groups of the GO and the functional properties of the final product were similar in case of both composites. However, Pt/TiO2-GO derived sample showed higher oxygen reduction reaction activity than Pt/TiO2-BP derived one. Based on the decrease of electrochemical surface area, the stability order was the following: Pt/C (commercial) < Pt/TiO2-BP derived C < Pt/TiO2-GO derived C.

The tuning sensitivity towards CO2 detection under in-field-like conditions was investigated using SnO2-sensitive material deposited onto Al2O3 substrates provided with platinum electrodes with interdigital gaps of 100 mu m and 30 mu m. X-ray diffraction, low-magnification and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and electrical and contact potential difference investigations were employed to understand the sensing mechanism involved in CO2 detection. The morpho-structural analysis revealed that the SnO2 nanoparticles exhibit well-defined facets along the (110) and (101) crystallographic planes. Complex phenomenological investigations showed that moisture significantly affects the gas sensing performance. The experimental results corroborated the literature evidence, highlighting the importance of Pt within the interdigital electrodes subsequently reflected in the increase in the CO2 sensing performance with the decrease in the interdigital gap. The catalytic efficiency is explained by the distribution of platinum at the gas-Pt-SnO2 three-phase boundary, which is critical for enhancing the sensor performance.

This research targets the need for eco-friendly strategies in the synthesis of bioactive materials, addressing the importance of valorization of vegetal waste. This study focuses on developing biohybrids containing biomimetic lipid vesicles and phytosynthesized gold-silver chloride nanoparticles (AuAgCl NPs) derived from Achillea millefolium L. extract. By leveraging the natural antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the plant, the research proposes a sustainable approach to creating materials with potential biomedical applications. The biomimetic membranes were loaded with chlorophyll a, a natural spectral marker. Three types of bioactive materials (biohybrids) were developed by varying the lipid vesicle/AuAgCl NP ratio. Optical (UV-Vis, fluorescence emission, FTIR), structural (XRD), elemental (EDX, XPS), and morphological (TEM) studies were performed to characterize the bio-developed materials. The hydrophobic/hydrophilic characteristics of the samples were investigated by measuring the water contact angle, and their size was estimated by DLS and TEM. Zeta potential measurements were used to evaluate the physical stability of phyto-developed particles. Antioxidant properties of phyto-particles were investigated through the chemiluminescence technique. The obtained biomaterials exhibited high antioxidant activity and antiproliferative activity against HT-29 and B-16 cancer cells. Therapeutic index values were calculated for each biohybrid. Additionally, the bio-prepared hybrids revealed biocidal action against Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. The phyto-developed biomaterials are promising in biomedical applications, particularly as adjuvants in cancer therapy.

Rare-earth doped GdF3 nanocrystals embedded in silica glassy matrix have been prepared by controlled crystallization of the xerogel; the influence of rare-earth ion (Pr, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Er, Yb) and additional Li-codopant on structural and optical properties was discussed. The precipitation of RE-doped GdF3 nanocrystalline phase is the result of Gd-trifluoracetate thermolysis revealed as a strong exothermic peak at around 300 degrees C. Structural analysis of RE-doped SiO2-GdF3 glass-ceramic sample calcined at 525 degrees C showed the occurrence of GdF3 nanocrystals of about 25 nm size, showing hexagonal or orthorombic structure depending on the RE-ion. Under UV-light excitation at 273 nm of Gd3+ ions (S-8(7/2) -> I-6(13/2,15/2) transition), photoluminescence spectra showed characteristic RE3+ luminescence due to the non-radiative energy transfer between the excited Gd3+ and acceptor RE ions; the highest energy transfer (congruent to 80 %) was observed for Tb3+ and lowest (congruent to 21 %) for Sm3+.

We study the dependence of photo-spectral intensity on tri- and multilayers of SiO2/[SiGe [ dSiGe]/SiO2]N with repetitions N = 1 to 10 and thicknesses dSiGe=5-100 nm. Photocurrent analysis reveals a bimodal spectral feature. A comparison of the photocurrent analysis between tri- and multilayers shows that in the multilayer structures, the photo-spectral intensity increases with increasing repetition N. The change in intensity could then be further tuned by changing the thickness of the SiGe layers dSiGe. We attribute the change in intensity to an increase in tensile strain, along with increased Ge atomic concentration and reduced SiGe-nano cluster size.

15 at.% Yb3+:YAG/YAG transparent composite ceramics with a coaxial geometry were synthesized by a ceramic forming method combined with the reactive sintering at 1800 degrees C. Densification peculiarities, microstructure, optical properties, and laser characteristics of composite ceramic samples were studied. Powder mixtures of Yb3+:YAG and YAG stoichiometric compositions demonstrate almost the same densification enabling uniform shrinkage of composite without differential sintering. It was shown that in-line optical transmittance of 15 at.% Yb3+:YAG/YAG composite ceramics reaches 80 % at 1030 nm wavelength. The effective diffusion coefficient of Yb3+ ions in garnet structure has been determined. Efficient laser emission was generated from Yb3+:YAG/YAG composite ceramics with a slope efficiency of eta(sa) = 0.30.

Blending carbon particles (CPs) and nanoscale bioactive cerium dioxide is a promising approach for designing composites for biomedical applications, combining the sorption and antioxidant potentials of each individual component. To address this issue, it is crucial to assess the correlation between the components' ratio, physicochemical parameters, and biofunctionality of the composites. Thus, the current research was aimed at fabricating C@CeO2 composites with different molar ratios and the examination of how the parameters of the composites affect their bioactivity. XRD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron microscopy data verified the formation of C@CeO2 composites. CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) of 4-6 nm are highly dispersed on the surfaces of amorphous CPs. The presence of CeO2 NPs on the carbon surface decreased its adsorption potential in a dose-dependent manner. Besides, the coexistence of carbon and CeO2 in a single composite promotes some redox interactions between O-functionalities and Ce3+/Ce4+ species, resulting in changes in the chemical state of the surface of the composites. These observations suggest the strong connection between these parameters and the biofunctionality of the composites. The presence of CeO2 NPs on the surface of carbon led to a significant increase in the stability of the prepared composites in their aqueous suspensions. The enhancement of bioactivity of the newly prepared C@CeO2 compared to bare carbon and CeO2 was validated by testing their pseudomimetic (catalase/peroxidase-like and superoxide dismutase-like), antiamyloid, and radioprotective activities.
