The project goal is to integrate and apply in an innovative manner the existing technologies (electrospinning, 3D printing, high magnetic field slip casting, infiltration, spark plasma sintering (SPS), floating zone process (FZ)) for fabrication of complex composite materials with organized structures. Focus will be on ceramic-ceramic, metal-ceramic composites without being limited to them. Green bodies are designed and manufactured. They have organized structures and are further processed to obtain the final composite by sintering or reactive sintering. A second new and innovative approach is to apply floating zone (FZ) for bonding/sintering within and between layers with geometrically organized patterns of the green bodies. Heating in FZ is local, i.e. on the small volume of the layer so that the composite material is fabricated step-by-step by adding processed layers one after another in an additive layer-by-layer sequence. Expectations are to understand processing-properties relationships and advantages and limitations of the proposed concept and approach targeting advancement of future sintering and additive manufacturing technologies.
