I graduated from the Univeristy of Bucharest in 2004, majoring in Theoretical and Condensed Matter Physics. After completing his MSc in Theroetical Phyics, I enrolled in the Graduate School of the Bucharest University in 2006. Under the guidance of Prof. Ioan Baltog, I received my PhD in Phyics in 2011 with a thesis focusing on the nonlinear optical properties of nanostructures.
Since 2006 I work at the National Institute of Materials Physics, focusing on understanding the interplay between the crystalline structure, local environment and functionality of materials, with a particular emphasis on the quantum mechanisms accompanying the reduced dimensionality (2D: surfaces and interfaces, 1D systems and 0D: quantum dots).
During 2015-2016 period I worked at the Swiss Light Source synchrotron in Switzerland with a Swiss Excellence Grant.
My approach combines preparation of materials by molecular beam epitaxy or pulsed laser deposition with their study using electron spectroscopies (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy – XPS, angle resolved photoemssion – ARPES, Auger electron scpetroscopy - AES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopies performed at NIMP or at synchrotron facilities, with additional theoretical understanding from first-principles calculations.
