Start Date:

6 June, 2017

End Date:

The project was extended from 14 May, 2020 to 31 July 2021 due to COVID-19

Project Abstract:

The innovation of this project consists in the evaluation for the first time of the MgB2 potential for biomedical applications, although it is currently produced for superconductivity devices. Expectations are to generate new MgB2-based composite multifunctional biomaterials with antimicrobial/antifouling properties, and an increased biocompatibility at interfaces between the material and the biological media. The mechanical and physical-chemical properties of the proposed materials as poweders, coatings, and bulks will be investigated by a comprehensive approach, and bioevaluation will include in vitro and in vivo assays. The MgB2 materials are viewed as solutions for space and time- scale controlled variation of the functional properties required for different bio-applications.

Project Objectives:

Higher standards of living and improvements in medicine led to an increase in life expectancy, correlated with a continuing greater demand for medical devices. The Global Industry Analysis and Forecast 2016 – 2024 predicts that the biomaterials market will reach 120 Billion Euro by 2020. However, the more and more frequent, prolonged use of medical devices has been linked to an increased risk related to biofilm associated infections. As a consequence of these chronic, persistent and hard to treat infections, healthcare budgets increase, hospital stays are prolonged and patients’ mortality and morbidity are higher. In this context, the prevention and eradication of biofilm infections represents a real challenge for materials science.

Taking these facts into account we consider appropriate to conduct a multidisciplinary research project, proposing a new solution for improved/safer biomaterials.

The BIOMB project is a concerted endeavour of ROMANIA and ITALY to conduct mechanical, physico-chemical and biological investigations of new Mg-based composite materials for biomedical applications. Designing biomaterials and medical devices with increased resistance to microbial colonization without impairing their biocompatibility is the main aim of our project. In this endeavour, a complex methodological approach will be used in order to provide improved biomaterials with optimum mechanical and biocompatibility properties and with the ability to resist microbial colonization and subsequent biofilm development.

The general objective of the project is fabrication of materials based on MgB2 and exploration of the properties targeting biomedical applications.

The project is structured into the following work packages, WP:

WP I, Responsible researcher: G. Aldica

Physico-chemical characterization of MgB2 powders and of other raw materials (additives, adhesives, others)
