21. Ferroelectricity Induced by Oxygen Vacancies in Rhombohedral ZrO2 Thin Films

Rhombohedral phase HfxZr1-xO2 (HZO, x from 0 to 1) films are promising for achieving robust ferroelectric polarization without the need for an initial wake-up pre-cycling, as is normally the case for the more commonly studied orthorhombic phase. However, a large spontaneous polarization observed in rhombohedral films is not fully understood, and there are also large discrepancies between experimental and theoretical predictions. In this work, in rhombohedral ZrO2 thin films, we show that oxygen vacancies are not only a key factor for stabilizing the phase, but they are also a source of ferroelectric polarization in the films. This is shown experimentally through the investigation of the structural properties, chemical composition and the ferroelectric properties of the films before and after an annealing at moderate temperature (400 degrees C) in an oxygen environment to reduce the V-O concentration compared. The experimental work is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations which show that the rhombohedral phase is the most stable one in highly oxygen defective ZrO2 films. The DFT calculations also show that V-O contribute to the ferroelectric polarization. Our findings reveal the importance of V-O for stabilizing rhombohedral ZrO2 thin films with superior ferroelectric properties.

22. Surface species of nematic mixture E7 in hard confinement: spectroscopic investigations cannot distinguish among the E7 components interacting with the support surface

Properties of surface species of the nematic mixture E7 in contact with inorganic oxides (especially those containing more or less aluminium ions) are in detail investigated by infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry. The absorption infrared peaks were decomposed into Gaussian components, the procedure allowing an easier comparison with the behaviour of related composites. We worked at enough small concentrations of the E7 relatively to support this ratio permitting the (partial) elimination of the species belonging to the bulk. Species put here in evidence are species that are hydrogen bonded to the surface of OH groups, molecules randomly oriented on the surface, some species bonded by involvement of pi electrons of the CN group to the aluminium ions, thus implying a strong interaction to the support. Supramolecular assemblies of E7 molecules are thus followed up.

23. In vitro analysis of the cytotoxic effect of two different sizes ITER-like tungsten nanoparticles on human dermal fibroblasts

Background: Based on the current configuration of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, tungsten (W) was chosen as the armour material. Nevertheless, during operation, the expected power and temperature of plasma can trigger the formation of W dust in the plasma chamber. According to the scenario for a Loss Of Vacuum Accident (LOVA), in the case of confinement failure dust is released, which can lead to occupational or accidental exposure.Methods: For a first evidence of potential risks, fusion devices relevant W dust has been produced on purpose, using a magnetron sputtering gas aggregation source. We aimed to assess the in vitro cytotoxicity of synthesized tungsten nanoparticles (W-NPs) with diameters of 30 and 100 nm, on human BJ fibroblasts. That was systematically investigated using different cytotoxic endpoints (metabolic activity, cellular ATP, AK release and caspase-3/7 activity) and by direct observation with optical and scanning electron microscopy.Results: Increasing concentrations of W-NPs of both sizes induced cell viability decrease, but the effect was significantly higher for large W-NPs, starting from 200 mu g/mL. In direct correlation with the effect on the cell membrane integrity, high concentrations of large W-NPs appear to increase AK release in the first 24 h of treatment. On the other hand, activation of the cellular caspase 3/7 was found significantly increased after 16 h of treatment solely for low concentra-tions of small W-NPs. SEM images revealed an increased tendency of agglomeration of small W -NPs in liquid medium, but no major differences in cells development and morphology were observed after treatment. An apparent internalization of nanoparticles under the cell membrane was also identified.Conclusion: These results provide evidence for different toxicological outputs identified as mechanistic responses of BJ fibroblasts to different sizes of W-NPs, indicating also that small W -NPs (30 nm) display lower cytotoxicity compared to larger ones (100 nm).

24. Ferroelectric Orthorhombic ZrO2 Thin Films Achieved Through Nanosecond Laser Annealing

A new approach for the stabilization of the ferroelectric orthorhombic ZrO2 films is demonstrated through nanosecond laser annealing (NLA) of as-deposited Si/SiOx/W(14 nm)/ZrO2(8 nm)/W(22 nm), grown by ion beam sputtering at low temperatures. The NLA process optimization is guided by COMSOL multiphysics simulations. The films annealed under the optimized conditions reveal the presence of the orthorhombic phase, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction, electron backscatter diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Macroscopic polarization-electric field hysteresis loops show ferroelectric behavior, with saturation polarization of 12.8 mu C cm(-2), remnant polarization of 12.7 mu C cm(-2) and coercive field of 1.2 MV cm(-1). The films exhibit a wake-up effect that is attributed to the migration of point defects, such as oxygen vacancies, and/or a transition from nonferroelectric (monoclinic and tetragonal phase) to the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase. The capacitors demonstrate a stable polarization with an endurance of 6.0 x 10(5) cycles, demonstrating the potential of the NLA process for the fabrication of ferroelectric memory devices with high polarization, low coercive field, and high cycling stability.

25. Outstanding visible light photocatalysis using nano-TiO2 hybrids with nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots and/or reduced graphene oxide

Historically, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been one of the most extensively studied metal oxide photocatalysts; however, it suffers from a large bandgap and fast charge recombination. We report the use of green, rapid, single-step continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis for the preparation of TiO2, and TiO2 hybrids with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and/or N-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) with significant enhancement in photocatalytic activity. Using a solar light generator under ambient conditions with no extra oxygen gas added, we observed the evolution reaction of the model pollutant (methylene blue) in real time. Tailoring of the light absorption to match that of the solar spectrum was achieved by a combination of materials of nano-TiO2 hybrids of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots and graphene in its reduced form with a photocatalytic rate constant of ca. 25 x 10(-5) s(-1). Using a diversity of state-of-the-art techniques including high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, transient photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high accuracy, sophisticated hybrid density functional theory calculations we have gained substantial insight into the charge transfer and modulation of the energy band edges of anatase due to the presence of graphene or carbon dots, parameters which play a key role in improving drastically the photocatalytic efficiencies when compared to pristine titania. More importantly, we prove that a combination of features and materials displays the best photocatalytic behaviour. This performance is delivered in a greener synthetic process that not only produces photocatalytic materials with optimised properties and tailored visible light absorption and efficiency but also provides a path to industrialization.

26. Fermiology of Chiral Cadmium Diarsenide CdAs2, a Candidate for Hosting Kramers-Weyl Fermions

Nonmagnetic chiral crystals are a new class of systems hosting Kramers-Weyl Fermions, arising from the combination of structural chirality, spin- orbit coupling (SOC), and time-reversal symmetry. These materials exhibit nontrivial Fermi surfaces with SOC-induced Chern gaps over a wide energy range, leading to exotic transport and optical properties. In this study, we investigate the electronic structure and transport properties of CdAs2, a newly reported chiral material. We use synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) to determine the Fermiology of the (110)-terminated CdAs2 crystal. Our results, together with complementary magnetotransport measurements, suggest that CdAs2 is a promising candidate for novel topological properties protected by the structural chirality of the system. Our work sheds light on the details of the Fermi surface and topology for this chiral quantum material, providing useful information for engineering novel spintronic and optical devices based on quantized chiral charges, negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, and nontrivial Chern numbers.

27. The influence of the synthesis method on Gd2O3 morpho-structural properties and sensitivity to CO2 under in-field conditions

In this study, we report the implications of the synthesis method on Gd2O3 sensitivity to CO2. The rare-earth oxide was prepared by wet chemical co-precipitation and by hydrothermal method. The obtained powders labelled Gd2O3-CoP and Gd2O3-HT were deposited as thick films over commercial Al2O3 substrates provided with Pt electrodes and a back-side heater. Both powders consist of the same crystallographic phase, with a significant difference appearing in selected area electron diffraction patterns, transmission electron microscopy images at higher magnification and X-ray diffraction spectra, with respect to the crystallization degree. The associated role in sensing properties is revealed via electrical resistance variations determined by CO2 concen-trations in the range between 400 and 3000 ppm and variable relative humidity between 0 and 50%RH, similar to the in-field atmosphere. The proposed CO2 interaction mechanism is based on phenomenological in-vestigations which highlight the electronic affinity variation as the effect of dipoles induced by the in-field conditions on the Gd2O3 surface.

28. Hydrogen Production Mechanism in Low-Temperature Methanol Decomposition Catalyzed by Ni3Sn4 Intermetallic Compound: A Combined Operando and Density Functional Theory Investigation

Hydrogen production from methanol decomposition to syngas (H2 + CO) is a promising alternative route for clean energy transition. One major challenge is related to the quest for stable, cost-effective, and selective catalysts operating below 400 degrees C. We illustrate an investigation of the surface reactivity of a Ni3Sn4 catalyst working at 250 degrees C, by combining density functional theory, operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. We discovered that the catalytic reaction is driven by surface tin-oxide phases, which protects the underlying Ni atoms from irreversible chemical modifications, increasing the catalyst durability. Moreover, we found that Sn content plays a key role in enhancing the H2 selectivity, with respect to secondary products such as CO2. These findings open new perspectives for the engineering of scalable and low-cost catalysts for hydrogen production.

29. Effects of mechanochemical activation on the structural, magnetic and optical properties of yttrium iron garnet-graphene nanoparticles

Yttrium iron garnet nanoparticles were exposed to mechanochemical activation by high-energy ball milling for 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 h, with and without graphene nanoparticles. The samples were subsequently characterized by Mo center dot ssbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), magnetic measurements and optical diffuse reflec-tance spectroscopy. Examination of the quadrupole doublet's abundance as function of ball milling time indi-cated that graphene slowed down the precipitation of the yttrium iron perovskite (yttrium orthoferrite) phase. The increased linewidth of the doublet showed that the carbon from graphene preferentially entered the lattice of the yttrium orthoferrite. The saturation magnetization decreased with decreasing particle size for prolonged milling due to the occurrence of the antiferromagnetic hematite phase. The enhanced absorption in the infrared region could be associated with the incorporation of carbon from graphene in the lattice of the yttrium ortho-ferrite. The results are interesting for sensing and microwave applications.

30. Synthetic peptide array on gold for the electrochemical assessment of the 20S proteasome activity and effect of inhibitory compounds

A sensor for the enzymatic activity and inhibition of the 20S proteasome was developed by immobilizing the synthetic peptide ABZ-VVSYAMG-(O2Oc)2-OH at Au electrodes. The detection principle is based on the elec-troactivity of ABZ, part of the ABZ-VVSY-OH moiety released from the peptide upon 20S proteasome chymo-trypsin action. The peptide was immobilized on a para-amino thiophenol (PATP) self-assembled monolayer on Au electrode by cross-linking its amino group to the -(O2Oc)2-OH moiety of the peptide (Au/PATP/peptide). The immobilization of the peptide and its interaction with 20S proteasome was investigated by SEM, QCM, SPR, ATR-FTIR and electrochemistry. The activity of 20S proteasome was assessed electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) after the immersion Au/PATP/peptide in 20S proteasome solution. CV study showed a decrease in both capacitive and faradaic currents corresponding to the ABZ-VVSY-OH removal, allowing the quantification of the 20S proteasome activity. The EIS study revealed that the resis-tance corresponding to charge transfer reactions at the peptide/solution interface correlated to the ABZ redox reaction, decreased linearly with increasing the incubation time in 20S proteasome solution. The perfected assay was applied for the investigation of the inhibitory effect of one synthetic, bortezomib, and two naturally occurring, epoxomicin, and lactacystin inhibitors.
