End Date: 31 March, 2015
Project Abstract:

The discovery of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by Iijima in 1991 has generated a great and sustained interest in the development of carbon based nanomaterials and their application in nanotechnologies. In the last decade many publications have gathered a tremendous progress made in the knowledge of physical and chemical properties of CNTs and their composites. In this context, numerous applications have been reported for CNTs and their composites in different fields such as photovoltaic cells, optical limiting devices, high-resolution printable conductors, electromagnetic absorbers, advanced transistors, super-capacitors and batteries. Using the Web of Science data base, a different progress is found out for the following three countries: Switzerland, Romania and Ukraine. The institutional partnership between Switzerland, Romania and Ukraine proposed to be achieved through this project has as goal developing of new ability in laboratories of National Institute of Materials Physics (Romania) and I. M. Frantsevich Institute for Problems of Materials Science (Ukraine) based on the experience of the Swiss investigators of Institut de Physique de la Matiere Condensee – Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne. A transfer of knowledges from countries of Eastern Europe to Switzerland is also envisaged.

Project Objectives:

1. Synthesis of SWNTs and their electrochemical functionalization with heteropolyanions and conjugated polymers

2. Optical, electrical and mechanical properties of CNTs functionalized with conjugated polymers and heteropolyanions

3. Evidences for the useful of CNTs functionalized with conjugated polymers and heteropolyacids as active materials in energy storage and sensors field
