Herein, as a novel idea, a microwave (MW) post-treatment strategy is proposed to modify the structure and surface characteristics of already prepared activated carbons (ACs) for application in non-aqueous Electric Double-Layer Capacitors. Pistachio nutshell-derived carbon is first KOH-activated and then subjected to MW irradiation for 0, 2, 5, and 10 minutes. X-ray Diffraction and Raman analyses show that MW post-treatment leads to structural modifications, and FTIR and XPS analyses reveal relative elimination of surface functional groups which results in subsequent enhancement in water contact angle and renders more favorable surface wetting of carbon by non-aqueous organic electrolyte. The performance characteristics of symmetrical non-aqueous supercapacitors incorporated with the prepared ACs show a significant positive effect of MW irradiation in such a way that 0 and 10-minute-irradiated ACs demonstrate 152 and 392 F g-1 capacities, respectively, at 1.75 A g-1, with the corresponding specific energies and powers of 340 Wh kg-1 and 11 kW kg-1 for AC-10, respectively. This remarkable enhancement in the electrochemical performance is attributed to the effective role of the MW post-treatment in modifying the AC structure as well as providing AC surfaces that have better wettability with less polar non-aqueous electrolyte. Moreover, this strategy is additionally applicable to make hydrophobic activated carbons for other applications as the absorption of less polar contaminants from liquid or gaseous environments.

Magneto-optical measurements enable the identification of Fe2+ and Fe3+ in the R and S blocks of BaFe12O19 Mhexaferrite powder obtained by sol -gel processing, followed by thermal annealing at 900 C for 3 hours. The ferromagnetic phase is evidenced by the spin-majority configuration (Fe3+) due to their unpaired electrons between d -d orbitals, while the Fe2+ in the low spin possesses diamagnetic behavior strongly dependent on the surrounded crystal field. Additionally, the irradiation with gamma rays changes the ratio between Fe2+/Fe3+, mainly on the surface of BaFe12O19 nanocrystals. These changes were confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements, in which the concentration of Fe2+ increased from 69% to 82%, while the one of Fe3+ decreased from 31% to 18%. he thermoluminescent measurements reveal the same changes of Fe3+ in Fe2+ by electron capturing during irradiation, which is released as a red emission after recombination processes. The changes are explained by the increasing of some Fe-O bonds along the c-axis, mainly due to breaking a part of these bonds. The X-ray analysis confirms the changing of the parameters for the BaFe12O19 hexagonal structure.

This work presents the ability of WO3-based sensors to detect low traces of acetone, specifically within the range of 0.25-5 ppm, specific to the in -field atmosphere. The WO3 powder was synthesised through the hydrothermal method. Morpho-structural investigations showed a monoclinic structure and a good crystallization of the WO3 powder, containing well -grown and faceted grains along low -index crystallographic planes. The paste obtained by mixing the powder with propanediol was screen -printed as a thick layer onto commercial alumina substrates, obtaining the chemical sensors. A dynamic computer -controlled Gas Mixing System was utilized to ensure controlled airflow with variable relative humidity and acetone concentrations. The sensor response was explained based on physico-chemical equations, taking into consideration pre -adsorbed species of oxygen and water, both of which are relevant constituents of atmospheric conditions. The results highlight the applicative potential of WO3, having a good signal-to-noise ratio in relative humidity conditions up to 90% and a pronounced sensitive selectivity to acetone.

The outstanding properties exhibited by the p-type NiO nanostructures can be greatly affected by morpho-structural and defect characteristics with constructive or competing effects. We have conducted an in-depth study on NiO nanoparticles obtained by hydrothermal synthesis and submitted to various thermal treatments, to monitor the evolution of their structural properties and the effect of the thermal history on their CO sensing. Correlated electron paramagnetic resonance and analytical transmission electron microscopy investigations evidenced an amount of up to 1 % metallic nickel clusters close to surface in the NiO nanoparticles calcined at 400 degrees C and 500 degrees C for 8 h. Subsequent annealing in vacuum and in air of the sample calcined at 400 degrees C resulted in different size distributions and morphology of the NiO nanoparticles and an increase/decrease of the nickel phase, respectively. Comparative CO sensing tests on the two pristine samples and on the sample calcined at 400 degrees C and further annealed in air at 500 degrees C for 2 h showed an increase in the baseline resistance of the later due to the decrease of free charge carriers induced by the dissolution of the nickel clusters. The overall CO sensing results show a strong dependence on the samples thermal history.

In this work, the effects of 60Co y -ray irradiation on high resistivity p -type diodes have been investigated. The diodes were exposed to dose values of 0.1, 0.2, 1, and 2 MGy. Both macroscopic (I-V, C-V) and microscopic investigations, by means of Thermally Stimulated Current (TSC) and Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (DLTS) techniques, were conducted to characterize the radiation -induced changes. The investigated diodes were manufactured on high resistivity p -type Float Zone (FZ) silicon and were further classified into two types based on the isolation technique between the pad and guard ring: p -stop and p -spray. After irradiation, the macroscopic results of current-voltage and capacitance-voltage measurements were obtained and compared with existing literature data. Additionally, the microscopic measurements focused on the development of the concentration of different radiation -induced defects, including the Boron interstitial -Oxygen interstitial (BiOi) complex, the Carbon interstitial -Oxygen interstitial (CiOi) defect, the H40K, and the so-called I*P. To investigate the thermal stability of induced defects in the bulk, isochronal annealing studies were performed in the temperature range of 100 degrees C to 300 degrees C. These annealing processes were carried out on diodes irradiated with doses of 1 and 2 MGy. Furthermore, in order to investigate the unexpected results observed in the C-V measurements after irradiation with high dose values, the surface conductance between the pad and guard ring was measured as a function of both dose and annealing temperature.

Tungsten is the primary candidate armour material for the divertor target of the European demonstration fusion power plant. During operation at high temperature, pure tungsten is subject to fracture and recrystallization which results in a loss of strength and worsening of the thermal properties. Additionally, loss-of-coolant accidents with simultaneous air ingress can generate volatile and radioactive tungsten oxides. Advanced W-alloys were developed as alternative and upgrading armour materials of pure tungsten, such as potassium-doped tungsten laminates and self-passivating tungsten alloys. Three mock-ups were manufactured using potassium-doped tungsten laminates, W-10Cr-0.5Y and W-10Cr-0.5Y-0.5Zr as armour materials, each of them consisting of n degrees 4 blocks. The fabrication required optimization and upscaling of the ITER-like process which foresees oxygen-free high conductivity copper as interlayer joined to W-alloy armour block and CuCrZr ITER grade pipe welded to the Cu/W-alloy blocks by hot radial pressing. For quality control of the fabrication steps, non-destructive examination by ultrasonic testing was done on the monoblocks as received, after casting, after hot radial pressing and after high heat flux testing. The results demonstrated that these W-alloys can be used as armour materials of the European demonstration fusion power plant divertor target.

Quantum electrodynamical density functional theory is applied to obtain the electronic density, spin polarization, as well as orbital and spin magnetizations of square periodic arrays of quantum dots or antidots subjected to the influence of a far-infrared cavity photon field. A gradient-based exchange-correlation functional adapted to a 2D electron gas in a transverse homogeneous magnetic field is used in the theoretical framework and calculations. The obtained results predict a non-trivial effect of the cavity field on the electron distribution in the unit cell of the superlattice, as well as on the orbital and spin magnetizations. The number of electrons per unit cell of the superlattice is shown to play a crucial role in the modification of the magnetization via the electron-photon coupling. The calculations show that cavity photons strengthen the diamagnetic effect in the quantum dot structure, while they weaken the paramagnetic effect in the antidot structure. As the number of electrons per unit cell of the lattice increases, the electron-photon interaction reduces the exchange forces that will otherwise promote strong spin splitting for both the dot and the antidot arrays. In this work, the formation of the orthorhombic phase of ZrO2 together with the minor monoclinic phase were elucidated by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Moreover, oxidized W can be responsible for the formation of oxygen vacancies in the ZrO2 through oxygen scavenging. The ferroelectric properties of the W/ZrO2/W film capacitors were investigated through piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and polarizationvoltage measurements. A second-order phase transition from the polar orthorhombic phase to the non-polar tetragonal phase was observed. Density functional theory calculations confirm our experimental results and propose that oxygen vacancies are responsible for the Curie-Weiss temperature of 130 degrees C, significantly lower than the theoretical value for the bulk.

Magnesium ions, MgO nanoparticles and thin films, magnesium alloys and cerium compounds are materials intensively studied due to their corrosion protection, antibacterial and pharmacological properties. In this work, we have designed, prepared and investigated, novel thin films of MgO doped with cerium, deposited on Mg alloy (AZ31) for temporary implants, in order to enhance their life time. More precisely, we report on microstructure and corrosion behavior of MgO pure and doped with 0.1 at % Ce films, fabricated by sol-gel route coupled with spin-coating technique, on AZ31 alloy substrate. A modified sol-gel method that start from magnesium acetylacetonate, cerium nitrate and 2-methoxyethanol (as a stabilizer for the sol) was been used successfully for cerium doped MgO sol precursor preparation. The structure and morphology of the surface of the coatings, before and after immersion for 7-30 d in Hank's solution at 37 degrees C, were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier infrared transmittance spectrum (FT-IR). A comparison between the corrosion protection of undoped MgO and MgO doped with 0.1 at % Ce coatings on the AZ31 alloy substrate is performed by electrochemical tests and immersion tests using open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in Hank's solution, at 37 degrees C. The electrochemical results showed that the protection of the AZ31 alloy substrate against corrosion was better with the doped with 0.1 at % Ce MgO film deposited than with pure MgO coting. The investigations of the films after immersion in Hank's solution, at 37 degrees C, for 7, 21 and 30 d indicated that the grown layer on the film is bone like apatite that suggests a good bioactivity of 0.1 at % Ce-doped MgO coating. Our work demonstrates that the performance corrosion protection of the biodegradable magnesium alloys used for orthopedic applications, in simulated physiological environments (Hank and Ringer) can be enhanced through coating with Ce3+ doped MgO sol-gel thin film.

The CuFeTaTiW multicomponent alloy has been devised as an interlayer thermal barrier in nuclear fusion re-actors. In order to predict the phase constitution of this alloy, two different lines of work were performed: (a) simulation using Molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo and (b) study of the influence of mechanical alloying parameters on the structures formed. The simulation results show that the most stable structure is achieved starting from a bcc type-structure and using Monte Carlo simulation. In fact, in these conditions the separation into two bcc phases Fe-Ta-W and Cu-Ti is predicted at room temperature. However, the experimental preparation of the materials with mechanical alloying revealed that from 2 h of milling a single bcc phase is formed. The structure of the milled powder was not much influenced by the amount of the process control agent and the by the size of the W starting particles, but generally there was formation of Ta2H from the reaction between the powders and the process control agent.
