The catalytic activity of a series of vanadium aluminophosphates catalysts prepared by sol-gel method followed by combustion of the obtained gel was evaluated in glycerol conversion towards methanol. The materials were characterized by several techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), Raman and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) spectroscopies. The amount of vanadium incorporated in aluminophosphates framework played an important role in the catalytic activity, while in the products distribution the key role is played by the vanadium oxidation state on the surface. The sample that contains a large amount of V(4+)has the highest selectivity towards methanol. On the sample with the lowest vanadium loading the oxidation path to dihydroxyacetone is predominant. The catalyst with higher content of tetrahedral isolated vanadium species, such V5APO, is less active in breaking the C-C bonds in the glycerol molecule than the one containing polymeric species.

In this study, we report on the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of Tb3+-doped CeF(3)nanocrystals prepared via a polyol-assisted route, followed by calcination. X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy investigations have shown the formation of a dominant Ce(0.75)F(3)nanocrystalline phase (of about 99%), with a relatively uniform distribution of nanocrystals about 15 nm in size. Magnetization curves showed typical paramagnetic properties related to the presence of Ce(3+)and Tb(3+)ions. The magnetic susceptibility showed a weak inflexion at about 150 K, assigned to the cerium ions' crystal field splitting. Under UV light excitation of the Ce(3+)ions, we observed Tb(3+)green luminescence with a quantum yield of about 20%.

Specific functional characteristics of the ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Fe67.5Pd30.5Ga2 prepared as ribbons by rapid quenching technique are reported. The shift of the martensitic transformation temperature induced by the applied magnetic field was determined from the thermomagnetic measurements at various fields up to 5T being proved to be in good agreement with the result obtained from calorimetric data via the Clapeyron - Claussius relation. Magnetostriction measurements reveal a pure spin rotation mechanism under low applied magnetic fields, allowed by the reduced magnetic anisotropy. In high magnetic fields and at temperatures close to martensitic transformation, the magnetostriction has a linear increase up to the maximum considered magnetic induction of 3T. This behavior has been discussed in connection with the forced magnetostiction aspects.

The objective of the present study is the valorization of natural resources and the recycling of vegetal wastes by converting them into novel plasmonic bio-active hybrids. Thus, a "green" approach was used to design pectin-coated bio-nanosilver. Silver nanoparticles were generated from two common garden herbs (Mentha piperitaandAmaranthus retroflexus), and pectin was extracted from lemon peels. The samples were characterized by the following methods: Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), dynamic light scattering (DLS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)-Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and zeta potential measurements. Microscopic investigations revealed the spherical shape and the nano-scale size of the prepared biohybrids. Their bioperformances were checked in terms of antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The developed plasmonic materials exhibited a strong ability to scavenge short-life (96.1% divided by 98.7%) and long-life (39.1% divided by 91%) free radicals. Microbiological analyses demonstrated an impressive antibacterial effectiveness of pectin-based hybrids againstEscherichia coli. The results are promising, and the obtained biomaterials could be used in many bio-applications, especially as antioxidant and antimicrobial biocoatings.

This study reports on the results obtained after doping the [CH3NH3](0.94)[C3N2H5](0.06)PbI2.6Cl0.4 mixt halide perovskite with europium or antimony (Eu3+/Sb3+) at the 'B site'. This way two new complex compounds were obtained, [CH3NH3](0.94)[C3N2H5](0.06)Pb1-yByI2.6Cl0.4 (B = Eu or Sb and y = 0-0.05) as perovskite precursor solutions and deposited as thin films. The properties of the perovskite films were investigated by various characterization techniques: x-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-vis spectroscopy while the photovoltaic parameters were determined by measuring the IV curves of the corresponding solar cells. We find that doping the mixt halide perovskite with very small quantities of Sb improves the quality of the perovskite films and further improves the stability of perovskite solar cells.

Industrial wastewater can be properly treated using nanotechnologies and nanomaterials. This paper presents the synthesis and characterization of three series of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and corresponding thin films, used for the degradation of organic compounds and removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater. The samples were obtained by co-precipitation from a ferric (Fe3+) and ferrous (Fe2+) ions solution in a molar ratio of 2:1, at temperatures between 80-95 degrees C. The characterization of the samples was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The magnetic nanoparticles were deposited on glass substrates by the centrifugal coating technique and the optical and magneto-optical activity was investigated by UV- Vis spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism technique (MCD). The effect of the investigated samples on the decomposition under UV irradiation of organic dyes was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Our preliminary results have shown that the magnetite and maghemite MNPs can be effective in UV degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye.

Within the Landauer transport formalism we demonstrate that conductance zeros are possible in bipartite systems at half-filling when leads are contacted to different sublattice sites. In particular, we investigate the application of this theory to graphene quantum dots with leads in the armchair configuration. The obtained conductance cancellation is robust in the presence of any single-site impurity.

Bulk discs (20 mm diameter and 4.3 mm thickness) of MgB2 added with Ge2C6H10O7 were obtained by Spark Plasma Sintering. Six samples with composition Mg B 2 (Ge2C6H10O7)(0.0014) and one undoped sample were fabricated under similar conditions and were magnetically characterized in order to determine the scattering of properties and reproducibility. The main source of the scattering of the properties is the decomposition of the additive due to elimination of the organic part in gas form, which occurs stepwise with intensive vacuum drops at around similar to 560 and similar to 740 degrees C. A third drop, which is sometimes not well resolved being part of the second peak at 740 degrees C, occurs at similar to 820 degrees C. The critical temperature at the midpoint of the transition, T-C, shows only a relatively small variation between 37.4 and 38 K, and the irreversibility field at a low temperature of 5 K takes values between 8 and 10 T. The pinning force and pinning force related parameters do not correlate with the carbon substituting for boron in MgB2 and suggest a synergetic influence of the microstructural details and carbon. Overall, despite the superconducting properties scattering, the samples are of high quality. Stacked into a column of six samples, they can trap at the center and on the surface of the column a magnetic field of 6.78 and 5.19 Tat 12 K, 5.20 and 3.98 Tat 20 K and 2.39, and 1.96 Tat 30 K. These promising values, combined with facile fabrication of the samples with relatively high quality and reproducibility, show the feasibility of their use in building complex and large compound arrangements for bulk magnets and other applications.

We present a hard and soft x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study of the interface chemistry in pristine TiN/La-doped Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2/TiN capacitors. An oxynitride phase (similar to 1.3nm) is formed at the top interface, while a TiO 2 - delta phase was detected near the bottom interface. The oxygen vacancy ( V O) concentration is higher at the top interface than in the film due to oxygen scavenging by the top electrode. The V O concentration was also found to increase from similar to 1.5 to 1.9 x 10 20 cm - 3 when increasing La doping from 1.7 to 2.7mol. %. Two La dopants are compensated by the formation of one positively charged V O.

The photovoltaic (PV) response of SnOx/Si heterojunctions (HJs) through the change of the SnO and SnO(2)ratio in the samples that allows us to obtain p- or n-type SnO(x)films is investigated in this work. The values of short-circuit photocurrent density (J(sc)), open-circuit voltage (V-OC), fill factor (FF) and power conversion efficiency (PCE) are found to be 12.6 mA cm(-2), 0.23 V, 27% and 8.3%, for the p-SnOx/n-Si HJ and 10.3 mA cm(-2), 0.20 V, 20% and 4.5% for the n-SnOx/p-Si HJ. The enhanced PV effect observed in the p-SnOx/n-Si HJs can be attributed to a small band offset between SnO(x)and Si, which lowers the diffusion length that can contribute to higher recombination rate and smaller series resistance. Furthermore, the values ofJ(sc),V-OC, FF and PCE were enhanced up to 30.9 mA cm(-2), -2.0 V, 19% and 10.9%, respectively, through the insertion of a 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3(BCZT) ferroelectric layer between n-Si and p-SnOx. The built-in field developed at the Si/BCZT/SiOx/SnO(x)interfaces together with the depolarizing field, provides a favorable electric potential for the separation and further transport of photo generated electron-hole (e-h) pairs. This work provides a viable approach by combining ferroelectrics with p-SnOx/n-Si HJs for building efficient ferroelectric-based solar cells.
