Recent achievements in ultrafast spin physics have enabled the use of heterostructures composed of ferromagnetic (FM)/non-magnetic (NM) thin layers for terahertz (THz) generation. The mechanism of THz emission from FM/NM multilayers has been typically ascribed to the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). In this work, we probe the mechanism of the ISHE by inserting a second ferromagnetic layer in the form of an alloy between the FM/NM system. In particular, by utilizing the co-sputtering technique, we fabricate Fe/L1(0)-FePt/Pt ultra-thin heterostructures. We successfully grow the tetragonal phase of FePt (L1(0)-phase) as revealed by X-ray diffraction and reflection techniques. We show the strong magnetic coupling between Fe and L1(0)-FePt using magneto-optical and Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) magnetometry. Subsequently, by utilizing THz time domain spectroscopy technique, we record the THz emission and thus we the reveal the efficiency of spin-to-charge conversion in Fe/L1(0)-FePt/Pt. We establish that Fe/L1(0)-FePt/Pt configuration is significantly superior to the Fe/Pt bilayer structure, regarding THz emission amplitude. The unique trilayer structure opens new perspectives in terms of material choices for the future spintronic THz sources.

The development of titania-based hybrid nanostructures with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity has been a key research area recently. The present study addresses current limitations of the TiO2 based composite photocatalyst by newly-experimental designing of flower-like multifunctional hybrid nanostructure with visible light capability through Ferrihydrite (Fh) surface TiO2 functionalization. Here, we present a versatile nanocompartimentalization process of which, core anatase TiO2 nanoparticles are emebeded into Fh lamellar shell. Physico-chemical properties related to the chemical structure and morphology of the prepared nanomaterials were comprehensively analysed using complementary analytical techniques, such as powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Ultra-High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (UHR-TEM), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and soft X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS). The conducted visible-light-driven photocatalytic water splitting tests highlights significant enhancement in the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) performance for TiO2-Fh core-shell nanoheterostructure of 25.6 mu mol/L of molecular oxygen after 60 min of visible light irradiation (AM1.5G), and a photocatalytic water oxidation activity rate of 341.3 mu mol L-1 g-1h-1. The biocompatibility assessment of the developed core-shell structures combined with their enhanced photocatalytic water oxidation activity under visible light illumination suits them as excellent candidates for the development of sustainable environmental remediation technologies.

CuO is a p-type semiconductor that can be found useful in various applications, sensing, photocatalysis or photovoltaics. Better material performance can be achieved by doping. In our study the doping was done using Cr ions and implantation method. Thin film samples were characterised with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique to study chemical properties of the films' surface and to determine the in-depth compositional profile of the films before and after annealing of an implanted sample. Spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to extract the dielectric function of CuO thin films. Depolarization measurements are shown as a useful method to quickly study differences between similar samples. XPS measurements proved that before annealing there is a peak of Cr concentration in depth of the sample, which is no longer present after annealing. Measurement of film resistance as function of temperature in range of 150-300 degrees C resulted with 0.82 eV bandgap. Electronic structure obtained with density functional theory calculations (DFT) showed that with Cr doping the energy band gap narrows and the material should become metallic.

DOI: 10.1007/s10948-025-07002-w

Show abstract

Superconducting bulk disks, of 20 mm in diameter and similar to 3.5-mm thickness of MgB2 were prepared by spark plasma sintering. Samples are co-added with 10 wt. % hexagonal BN (h-BN) or graphene (G) and other additives (B4C, Te, cubic BN, fullerene C-60, or Repa-C6H10O7Ge2 (GEP)), where h-BN and G are introduced in the composite to provide full machinability by chipping of the composite and the other additives to modify microstructure and superconducting characteristics. Measurements of trapped magnetic field B-tr for a fixed rate of the applied magnetic field decrease (0.00015 T/s) indicate that samples with G show less flux jumps, but a higher thermomagnetic stability is accompanied by lower values of B-tr than for samples with h-BN. The highest maximum B-tr at 12 K for samples added with h-BN or graphene was recorded for MgB2(Te)(0.01) + 10wt.% h-BN (3.48 T) and MgB2(B4C)(0.01) + 10wt.% G (2.73 T), respectively. These values of maximum trapped field were determined for an applied field of - 2.5 and - 1.8 T. Results suggest that machinable MgB2-based composites show potential for bulk superconducting magnet applications.

This paper presents the synthesis of La2Ti2O7 nanoparticles by the sol-gel method starting from lanthanum nitrate and titanium alkoxide (noted as LTA). Subsequently, the lanthanum titanium oxide nanoparticles are modified with noble metals (platinum) using the chemical impregnation method, followed by a reduction process with NaBH4. The comparative analysis of the structure and surface characteristics of the nanopowders subjected to thermal treatment at 900 degrees C is conducted using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, as well as specific surface area and porosity measurements. The photocatalytic activity is evaluated in the oxidative photodegradation of ethanol (CH3CH2OH) under simulated solar irradiation. The modified sample shows higher specific surfaces areas and improved photocatalytic properties, proving the better conversion of CH3CH2OH than the pure sample. The highest conversion of ethanol (29.75%) is obtained in the case of LTA-Pt after 3 h of simulated solar light irradiation.

This work reports the fabrication and optimization of nylon/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposite-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) using a spin coating method. By carefully tuning the MWCNT concentration, the device achieved a substantial enhancement in electrical output, with open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current peaking at 29.7 V and 3.0 mu A, respectively, at 0.05 wt% MWCNT loading on the surface of nylon. The corresponding power density reached approximately 13.9 mW/m2, representing a significant improvement over pure nylon-based TENGs. The enhanced performance is attributed to improved charge trapping and dielectric properties due to well-dispersed MWCNTs on the surface of nylon, while excessive loading caused agglomeration, reducing efficiency. This lightweight, flexible nanocomposite TENG offers a promising solution for efficient, sustainable energy harvesting in wearable electronics and self-powered sensor systems, highlighting its potential for practical energy applications.

Show abstract

Nb2C MXene, obtained from Nb2AlC by Al3+ etching and exfoliation, was characterized using XRD, HRTEM and AFM, with the data confirming the crystallinity of the sample and the 2D morphology of the sheets with an average layer thickness of 1.5 nm. Surface analysis using XPS revealed the presence of structural defects, and NH3- and CO2-TPD profiles confirmed the low density of acid and basic sites in the range of tens of mu mol gcatalyst-1 of weak and moderate strengths. The combination of acid and basic sites in close proximity on the solid surface was responsible for the remarkable catalytic activity of Nb2C MXene in promoting aldolic condensation with high turnover frequencies of up to 855 h-1, which was comparable to the values of benchmark catalysts, such as MgO or HZSM-5. Nb2C MXene also catalyzed the aerobic oxidative aniline coupling to azo- and azoxy-benzene and hydrogenation of azoxybenzene to azobenzene.

Biodegradable polymers like poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) are widely studied for their potential applications in biomedical and environmental fields. To enhance PCL's thermal, and bioactive properties, researchers have explored composite formulations with other polymers or bioactive compounds. Oleic acid (OA), a naturally occurring fatty acid, has been identified as a promising modifier. This study investigates the modification of PCL with OA using an eco-friendly catalyst to improve its functional properties. PCL was grafted with OA using Maghnite-H+, a heterogeneous solid catalyst clay activated via sulfuric acid treatment. A response surface methodology with a central composite design was applied to optimize synthesis parameters, including reaction temperature, duration, and catalyst concentration. The resulting composite was characterized using FTIR and NMR to confirm structural modifications, while its thermal stability was evaluated. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay, and antimicrobial potential was tested against various microorganisms. The PCL-OA composite exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity, with increased radical scavenging efficiency compared to unmodified PCL. Antimicrobial tests revealed strain-dependent effects, with improved inhibition observed in specific combinations of caprolactone, OA, and PCL-OA. The findings suggest that OA incorporation enhances PCL's bioactivity, making it a promising material for biomedical and packaging applications.

Show abstract

In this study, we expand the processing space of new, quantum-confined one-dimensional lepidocrocite (1DL) titania-based nanofilaments (NFs). Our previous work to date entailed reacting Ti-precursors (e.g., TiB2, TiOSO4, TiN, TiC, etc.) with the quaternary ammonium compound (quat) tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) for tens of hours under ambient pressures at temperatures ranging from 50 degrees C to 80 degrees C. Herein, we expand the list of quats that result in 1DL NFs to tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAH), tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAH), tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH), and choline hydroxide (ChoH). We also show that tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide (TBPH) can be used to the same end result. These quats and TBPH are less toxic than TMAH, especially Cho+, which is fully biocompatible. And, while all the quats and TBPH result in the same 1D product, their de-flocculation in various organic solvents is different. Reacting with less polar quats (e.g., TBA) and washing with less polar solvents (e.g., dichloromethane) favors the formation of porous mesostructured particles. 2D structures are favored if the opposite is chosen. Said otherwise, by the judicious choice of a quat (e.g., TPAH) and solvent (e.g., tert-butanol) combination, we produced stable 1DL colloidal suspensions in dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile, isopropyl alcohol, butanol, and acetone. This enhanced colloidal stability is critical in applications in coatings, inks, and catalytic systems where non-aqueous stable dispersions are paramount. The high band-gap energies, Eg, measured (3.8-3.9 eV) confirm quantum confinement. The Eg are also quite insensitive to d spacings between the 2D sheets. These 1DLs exhibit significant adsorption and dye (rhodamine 6G) degradation capabilities. For example, TEA-1DL colloidal suspensions adsorb 64% of the dye in the dark in about 5 min and decolorize 99% of the remaining dye within 30 min under the irradiance of one sun.

Show abstract

The study of spectral gamma-ray logs plays a critical role in understanding the lithofacies and depositional environments of subsurface geologic formations. This research focuses on the Lam Member within the Habban oilfield, located in the Sab'atayn Basin, Yemen. By integrating spectral gamma-ray data with core analysis and other geological datasets, this study aims to provide insights into the stratigraphic distribution, mineral composition, and depositional processes of the Lam Member. Key parameters, such as thorium, uranium, and potassium concentrations, recorded from two wells were analyzed to infer sedimentary characteristics and environmental conditions. The results reveal significant lithologic heterogeneity and suggest a complex interplay of fluvial and marine depositional systems, enhancing the understanding of the basin petroleum potential. The Lam Member comprises interbedded carbonate (dolomite) and claystone with intercalated sandstone. Spectral gamma-ray results indicate that clay minerals primarily consist of mixed-layer clays, chlorite, kaolinite, and minor illite. Based on the Th/U ratio (less than 2), the depositional environment is identified as marine.
